Comments on news posted 2006-03-28 18:32:20: An interesting article over at Light Reading about AT&T, Verizon, and Qwest's thoughts about p2p, and whether or not such traffic is a serious problem for their networks. ..

maybe

it's because people who really care about p2p would go for a faster cable line instead of qwest?

Setting up for the 'BIG LIE' later

"Obviously, unmanaged IP services deal with impairments. Sometimes they have slower response times," Rice says. "Sometimes they have quicker response times. It just depends on the usage and the volume of traffic on the network at any given time. In a managed environment, throughput is the same all the time." : TRANSLATION - In the future plan on paying for for the ability to use P2P

then add in..

"That's not to say that the RBOCs won't someday offer P2P services themselves." TRANSLATION - By the way, the only P2P that WILL work is going to be ours. Everyone else will be throttled down to 5kb/sec on your 10mb/sec pipe.

then add in..

"I don't want to be too negative on peer-to-peer, because I think there's a place for peer-to-peer communications going forward," says Verizon's Wegleitner. "I think what we have to do though is make sure it doesn't ruin the experience of everyone else." : TRANSLATION - We've not figured out how to rape you for using P2P.. YET, but we're working on it.

Summary : We don't know how to charge you for P2P traffic yet, but once we do, you can only use OUR P2P service, you'll pay extra for it, and you'll pay by the byte.

But by creating their own P2P network - are they in some way legitimizing file trading?
Edit: serious question, not trolling.

Given that the telcos tend to operate the backbones, companies like Qwest would still see the P2P traffic transiting their networks.

New Promotion for this guy...

Why does the scene from Scarface with the guy hanging from the helicopter come to mind here?

I would have posted an image... but then I realized my gf's sis has my Scarface DVD... UGH.

Could it be this one?

tworeactions

two reactions

Its a tale of two reactions:
Telcos shrug it off (that is until they enter the cable-tv and content business)
Cable companies shudder, as they know for every bit they ramp-up speeds, it's another brick in that poorly built katrina levy called rising cable-tv rates.

And to quote an Apple, Inc. CEO: video ipod, money money money by the pound!

"Reactive rather than proactive...."

Verizon meanwhile says they're ... being "reactive rather than proactive."
And this would differ from standard Ma Bell practices just how?

At least Ivan is being consistent with his BellHead upbringing....

Re: Setting up for the 'BIG LIE' later

What other point is there for P2P other than file trading?

And by legitimizing it, I hope you don't mean making the passing of illegal files legal. Distributing copyrighted material by P2P or any other means is still illegal and always will be until the laws change. This is regardless of what any network supports.

Boils down

I think it boils down to ISPs getting upset that they are using their services for things they don't want you to. It's like an all you can eat buffet getting mad because you are "spoiling it for everyone else" when you eat all the snow-crab legs you can eat...which happens to be a lot. Maybe next the Department of Highway Safety will tell us we can only drive to pre-approved places because driving anywhere else is clogging up the roads.

Qwest is sooooo sloooow it dosent matter

Its not a problem for Qwest because 90% of their user base is still stuck on 1.5 megabit connections (or slower). I am sure if the speeds were higher they might think differently.

big technological difference

DSL is circut switched basically, while cable is shared. Backbones are irrelavent and can easily be upgraded. Thats why DSL doesnt care, if DSL slows down, the whole internet slows down.
