They Merge and the crap has already begun...

Let's see. Day 1, DSL Extreme is aquired by IKANO. Day 2, we get some crap DNS redirect filled with ads on 404's and DSL Extreme calls it a "feature".

Weak excuse

quote:
Due to an increased number of support calls from our non internet savvy clients getting 404 errors

Oh com'n....you couldn't come up with anything better than that lame excuse?

Breaking the internet

Web browsing is not the only thing happening on the internet.

If the host name is not valid, then it should not resolve. Period.

404 errors can be handled gracefully by the web browser if the user chooses. Setting up a DNS server that successfully resolves bad host names is not a good thing.

Easy solution people...

Change your DNS servers to something useful.

Maybe try 4.2.2.2 through 4.2.2.6 ? (hint hint)

 Eh

In this case, you can avoid it all together by not using DSLExtreme's DNS servers.

This isn't as bad as I originally thought, which was they were sniffing HTTP traffic for 404's and sending their own response.

Re: Easy answer:

haven't happen to me yet, but if they start doing that and much more i may just jump to sbc. I was hopping that no changes would happen as result of dslx being sold but guess was wishful thinking

yes easy solution but it seems the other company is starting already to make changes. Next thing that they make change to maybe a little bit harder to bypass

 Thanks

Thanks for making this front page news. DSLExtreme needs to know that it's loyal client base is pretty upset about these changes.

A little "proggy" called change your DNS servers to something other than what the ISP is giving out.

Or, use there opt out "feature".

opt out don't work, and i shouldn't have to use someone else dns address just to avoid this problem, sounds like this company going downhill fast

Hehe - I have my Firewall block all references to doubleclick

The last time this issue popped up was with Verisign, if I'm not mistaken, where they decided that it was in everyones best interest to hit a search engine instead of a 404 error, and redirected all 404 traffic.

George, Ari, there are tools such as Google toolbars, MSN toolbars, etc. Why do you need this redirect, and why did you not notify your subscribers?

What's the alternative they offer?

"Our more internet savvy clients have the option to opt of using the system by selecting the about link at the bottom of the page. "
DSLExtreme users, if you click that opt out link, what does it say? Does it advise you to change your DNS server list, or what?

wow

WOW I would never in my entire life ever could imagine that people were that stupid. How can people be so incredibly retarded that they call their ISP when they can not get to a certain site. The only 404 I ever see are when I type some thing wrong or swap . for a ,

Re: Easy answer:

I believe Doubleclick's opt out feature is temporary (as in delete the cookie and it automatically assumes you are "opt-in" again).

Re: Weak excuse

I agree - how many people do not use a 'google' or other toolbar? It appears that Google won't give DSL-X $$$, but doubleclick will

Re: What's the alternative they offer?

It sets a cookie, which of course gets deleted as soon as cookies are cleared and you will have to opt again and again as cookies are cleared.

I've been a solid supporter of DSL Extreme for the 2+ years I've been with them, but this is ridiculous.
