Hey Scottsdale maybe you should take a lessons from Frisco's wi fi plan which sounds so much better now when compared to your own plan.

Too much for too little

Click for full size
Coverage Area
The coverage area isn't too bad and covers some fun places. It includes the Scottsdale Stadium (spring training), Fashion Square, the Old Town area shops. However, I can't imagine taking my laptop to Dos Gringos, Devil's Martini or E4 and surfing the internet there.

While the network covers some great places in Scottsdale I don't feel that it's a justifiable price. The only times I was ever in downtown Scottsdale were for drinking or food. If you were to frequent cafes and coffee shops it might be worth it. It's nice that it's available but I can't imagine someone who doesn't live in the area or work there subscribing.

WTF? Google is fitting the bill(ads) for S.F. wireless.
Taxpayers aren't paying for it.

You're right... a private company can offer access for free, just like a $10+ bln company can... Why is it that everything must be free or it's not right? The price is good if they can provide good bandwidth and coverage....

Most people would always want a free ride, the question is if it's worth the money?

Like you said if they provide decent speed's and coverage why not?

These citywide WiFi networks are mostly targeted for to outsider's or a way for the state to earn profits from visitors who use there networks. That way they can use that money to fund more public projects.

If the service is free then awesome if I just need in to put some extra cash sure, but if I need to put in a good amount of cash for something that's not worth it then no.

It's like going to the store and see something you want, but the price tag is 40 dollars. You figured it's not worth it, so you just walk past it and don't buy it. Simple as that.

A cooperation which has money to spare and actually uses it to benefit users instead of there own cooperate needs is a gift. Not something you deserve. I sure hope most people will remember that.

I live here but won't (can't) subscribe. For some that live and/or work in the area, it might be a very good thing.

Re: Rip

Scottsdale for the most part is mainly for the rich. if this were anywhere else it would probably be free. if you can give 30 sites free why not give all free?

You can never be too rich, too thin or have too much Bandwidth

Re: Rip = Not A Rip

Broadband access from Qwest (DSL) or COX (cable) will run you $50+ per month. $30 / month and I can leave my house.

I agree That I won't be bringing the iMac to the Devil's Martini, but surfing while the wife is shopping at Fashion Square, hmmmm. Not a bad plan!

I am also on call some weeks. It would be great to connect without having to drive to the office . Get in , fix it quick and get on with the weekend.

Read. It says it right there in the article.

30 websites can be visited free of charge. Full access for $29 a month or $4.25 an hour.

Too Expensive

I drive all over town installing camera/security systems and it would be nice to be able to login at lunch to check emails and such, but I don't spend that much time in the small part of Scottsdale to justify that cost.

Now if I worked at an office in that area and wanted to surf the net during lunch maybe.

We need Google to setup their wireless in Phoenix.

Mecca for hackers?

I heard the police are gonna use their mdt/laptops over wifi/wimax to pull up criminal history, plate checks, etc.
Scary, if you consider that would be a mecca for hackers. I wonder how many long it would take to crack WPA2 security. Hmm, guess we're about to find-out. Let the games begin.

Where's the details . . and the service?

I live firmly within the map for this service from Wildfire Broadband Wireless Communications »www.wildfirebroadband.com/ but so far it hasn't shown up on any wireless system I've booted up.

A nearby buddy has reported it works, at least for the 30 free web sites.

The company's web site offers few details on the service, like speed, availability, privacy, etc. I couldn't even find a sign up site until nearby buddy called Friday night.

Other online sources (»www.belairnetworks.com/about_bel···?p_id=76) say the network will offer access speeds of up to 6Mbps downstream and 2Mbps upstream. If so, this service level at $29 per month beats Cox Communcations service at $40+ a month.
