no thanks, I do not want high definition video of my grandmother, let alone anywhere near microsoft...

nice idea to have an online storage box, but it would be a privacy nightmare.

Are we forgetting Google? They index everything. Your video wouldn't be much safer with Google.

Will Use it

I will do it for media files pictures and stuff like that.. nothing sensitive, like tax records...the last take the least of space and I can have it on a usb drive and so on... however... I have over 300 gigs of pictures and family video that I would like to backup someplace else than home.. and have access to it relatively easy.

better off with tax records and personal Ident stuff on the USB drive, it can be locked up in a safe or lockbox. removiable media requires a B&E to "hack".

Re-inventing FTP

Isn't this just re-inventing FTP? Nice marketing spin though. I'll manage my data. Thank you.

storage

I will probably use the Gdrive for family pictures and such.Especially after finding out how short the lifespan on recordable optical media can be.I will however be very tempted to encrypt everything.

OneCare Component

MS Live OneCare doesn't allow back-up to network drives. (A big mistake IMHO.) This would be a logical (/nopun) place for OneCare's back up regimine to leave stuff.

I could live with that...

Sure, with what upload?

Are people really going to upload Granny's HD video conference over 384-768kbps connections? Until upload speeds are faster making use more practical, everyday use of these services won't be commonplace other than for the most essential backup items.

Humm...good point, that alone would defeat the purpose of such a service. Are you listening Comcast?

Keep dreaming....

Unless we start seeing 5Mbps+ upload speeds I doubt I would want to store anything online. Secondly even if I had that much upload I would just go buy myself a couple of 500GB HDs at the store and store all my videos and things in there instead of online.

well ... what if your house burn down today... how much of those drive 500GBs drive you will recover.. I do think is a nice concept that will allow the avg joe to have a "disaster recovery" option...

I have been looking for an affordable offsite remote option that will allow me to backup weekly my media and either of this two service will work for me.

edit
Also, I have 2mbps of upload. Which Is good to upload all this media... I'm not talking about streaming HD...

But do you have the upstream to put it there. It might take you months because the ISP's insist we don't need upstream bandwidth.

Re: Yeah right

no thanks privacy isues aside lets say i want to store a legally created vid file of say 300 megs my upload is only 350ishKB. Not fun how about full back up of downloaded installers for the games i play and the legal software i own that is nearly 80+ gigs of installers at 350ish upload that should be realy fun. Sorry ms yahoo google and who ever else comes out with these services it looks like a good idea on the surface untill you do the math then you find its not a feasable idea least not yet. Maybe in a few years when download speeds are mesured in the gig per sec range with uploads in the 100s of megs per sec then try it again and you might have a useable service on your hands.

My cable connection is 740Mbps downstream, and 128kbps upstream.

People do this all the time with their iDisk from .Mac. It's only 1GB but still, you can fill that up really easily. Then there's Spymac with their free WEBDAV moutable disk that is also 1GB which I use to back up my stuff. Of course I encrypt it before I upload it.

It's not going to be that hard to move a few GB onto a remote server, especially if you aren't going to move it all at once.

I've used .Mac to do this since 2002. I access my iDisk from my work Mac, home Mac, and PowerBook. Super convenient, and never had an issue yet (in 4 years so far).
