| Now they say it benefits terrorism During a speech in November, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales endorsed the idea and said at the time that he would send Congress draft legislation. Such changes are necessary because new technology is "encouraging large-scale criminal enterprises to get involved in intellectual-property theft," Gonzales said, adding that proceeds from the illicit businesses are used, "quite frankly, to fund terrorism activities." | |

| The FBI Works For the MPAA and RIAA Now! From the CNet article
Permits wiretaps in investigations of copyright crimes, trade secret theft and economic espionage. It would establish a new copyright unit inside the FBI and budgets $20 million on topics including creating "advanced tools of forensic science to investigate" copyright crimes. Looks like the FBI works for the **AA's now.

| An Easy Fix.... One thing that would shut the law down in its tracks is if someone could get Wal-Mart on their side and convince them that their Sam's Choice line is at risk. They would just tell Congress "No" and that would be the end of it because they own 9/10ths of both the house and the senate. | |

| Where's the beef? Well if Alberto is gonna say file sharing supports terrorism, he needs to prove it. And just like with the child porn rulings, he has nothing to show.

| People, people, people! I am surprised by the naivete displayed on this thread. Are none of you students of history? All we are seeing here is the inevitable evolution of politics. Political power breeds a desire for even more political power. The mechanism for acquiring and retaining that power is called money. It's always been that way, and it will always be that way, no matter what political system is involved. Our current political system is not a republic, or democracy, or fascism. It's called a plutocracy - rule by the wealthy. The wealthy can afford to buy the lawyers who write the laws in their favor, and buy the politicians who actually pass the laws. The only difference between now and the past is the type of bones thrown to us, Joe & Jane Consumer, and how the bones are thrown, so we won't notice what's going on. TV is the "great communicator" of our age. How many of us have commented on how bad TV is nowadays? TV is information control at its' purest. Look at our schools. You would think that the education of our young would be the highest possible priority for any civilized nation. That is most certainly not the case, because if it were, there would be generations of people educated enough to catch the politicians at what they are doing and call them on it. Call them right out of office, and never let them back in. Instead, our children are taught not to think for themselves. To critically analyze a given situation, research the actual facts, reach a reasoned conclusion, then act on it - that is the anathema of a plutocracy.
BTW, the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and so forth, ain't what it's cracked up to be. Just another bone thrown in the direction of "fair play", "give the common man a chance", and all the other platitudes used to keep the masses quiet. In ancient Rome, they used bread and circuses. In modern American, they use TV and sound bites. Same thing, different name.
Just so you know - I am a born-in-the-USA, bleed-red-white-and-blue, citizen of this country. I still tear up, and give the Citizen's Salute, when I hear the National Anthem. I grew up when being American was something to be proud of, and meant something good. I was forced to learn in my younger years, by parents who demanded that I get the education they never had a chance for. I paid my way through college by doing a tour in Korea and two tours in the 'Nam, courtesy of my upbringing, which happens to state that I owe this country something for the rights and privileges I enjoy as a citizen.
Nonetheless, this country is coming ripe for revolution. Declining morality, dropping education levels, the entitlement mentality, massive debt on a personal and national level, political indifference to the very real problems that confront our nation...I give the USA 20 years, maybe 25 on the outside. Then all Hell will break loose. After a few years, the cycle will start again. In 100 to 150 years, your great-great-grandchildren will be griping the same way we do today. I hope they have a better solution to their problems than we have to ours.

| Ahem...*does vocal warm-up* REBEL! THROW DOWN THE GOVERNMENT THAT ALLOWS THIS OPRESSION TO HAPPEN! Our government was founded under the context of a "Government by the people for the people" which now is "Government by the people corporations for the people corporations." We need to fight back and say "You listen to us...we no longer listen to you!" We need to re-structure our government to have regulated enterprise wherein the corporations are out for the customer and not for the bottom line.
"He who controls the past, commands the future. He who commands the future, conquers the past."
We need to command the future and take back control of the government.

| I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but Our elected officials are putting almost everything under the umbrella of 'the fight against terrorism' and 'stopping child pornography' and there's a new one, as averagedude said, the fight against drugs [and I used to want to move to AZ - this has made me think....]. Everybody wants to fight against those things, but nobody looks behind them and thinks 'that's fighting child pornography, how? And what else is it doing'. I started a thread about this once and was quickly burnt to a crisp by flames like 'those poor children' and 'you want another 9/11'.

| The bottom line is... Republican no longer means conservative or ethical or proponent of small government and balanced budgets.
Republican now means "for sale to the highest bidder"
False patriots, false Christians. Shameless liars. Not above a little treason if there is profit in it. Working relentlessly on buiding up an ever bigger, ever more secretive government controlling ever more of your life under the guise of "protecting" you -- sounds just like Goebbels 75 years ago.
At your expense, of course. Ever notice how your local and state taxes and corporate taxes levied by corporations in the form of bogus "regulatory fees" are going up faster than federal taxes have been "cut"?
