On just a hunch I'll say will not last to long or make much money due to the fact quote:
film download service that allowed you to burn a DVD copy that wouldn't actually work in a standard DVD player

what's the point in the dvd that won't work in a player?
I have vongo, and they did a survey where they asked if you'd be willing to buy a downloadable dvd, for I think it was $16 or so... I said no thanks. the rest of the service is ok, it works as advertised. Quality issues aside, it's easy enough to use and all.
Agreed that until the services can do what itunes did for music, that the movie services need lots of work. I prefer the subscription model where you can just pick what you want and not have to worry about wasting tons of money each month on films that might not even be that good. They need to improve the quality to match what the divx people have already been doing for years, ie, good resolution, smooth framerate (I consider this very important) and decent audio to go with it.
DRM is a whole 'nuther thing too, I don't mind what Vongo does, but it'd be much nicer to just watch the darn thing in media player/whatever else becaust their player needs work. mouse doesn't disappear, no playlist, no options for brightness/contrast etc, and yet it's based off of media player???
If they sold downloadable, and burnable, dvd iso's (with some form of easy burn process for people who don't know what to do with an iso...) for $5-8 people would eat it up. Maybe limit number of copies/times you can burn it, but leave the choice up to the buyer, go ahead and put on the (mostly useless and annoying) macrovision, go ahead and limit number of pc's etc, but make it easy and convenient.
Why haven't any of these services grasped what the music industry seems to have at least sort of got right? |

First, why buy a download that cannot be played where you want to play it(like in the living room on the DVD player).
Second, there aren't any movies worth paying for! All but VERY few, suck!
MOST of the movies I download, I delete, and bitch to myself about the wasted time and bandwidth.
The DVD Rips look good, but the movies blow chunks. 
Never was one for buying/saving movies(or music), watching a movie a second(or tenth) time is like reading the same book again. Redundant.

Not only a DVD that won't work in a DVD player, but one that takes almost 5 hours to download (versus a 20 minute trip to Best Buy or another local store) and is as expensive (if not more so) than a normal DVD. Out of sheer curiosity, I priced the Brokeback Mountain DVD on Amazon and Best Buy. Amazon had it for under $17. Best Buy for $20. The article stated that MovieLink had it on sale for $20, down from $30!
In addition, the article doesn't state whether any extras came with the movie. I'm guessing not since MovieLink's site doesn't seem to mention extras at all.
A quick look at their website also reveals that some movies are limited to use on one PC. So I guess you're out of luck if your PC bombs out.
So basically they want you to pay more for something that takes 5 hours to get, doesn't play in your standard DVD player, and doesn't include the extras that a normal DVD would. Sorry, but that's just not too tempting to me.

Im willing to lay odds,when this flawed from the start,falls flat on its face.We all know who will be blamed.You got it: Those damn pesky pirates as usual.
I wouldn't buy a ribbed trojan that has a hole in it that does not fit on..nevermind you get the idea,with this service one will get dicked royally

I was involved in a beta test to test a new service between movielink and MSNTVk, the idea was broadband users could rent movies from a special movielink website and stream them through the MSNTV to output on the TV, the plan was scrapped, no reason was ever given. although the rumors were that is wasn't a technical problem, it was just simply movilink baking out with no reason.
I do watch some other vidoe feeds on my MSNTV and they all work fine, and they look good on my 36 inch SONY HDTV. |

I haven't, and probably won't, tried this "service"... but I can get some insane download speeds off other sources and the DVDs *WILL* play where ever I wish them to!
Decisions - decisions... LOL! DUH!

he idea of being able to download to rent or buy is a good one (provided you have high speed). I use Movelink to rent movies and the download only takes about 30min (1 1/2 hours max), which is fine with me. I don't have to worry about late fess or having to return anything.
And before someone points out NetFlix of Blockbuster Online, I will comment that I am able to view what I want and when I want, with no waiting. If Movielink offered a monthly service, I may put some thought into it.

The problem where they take a good idea and turn it ugly is you can't use these movies in your own DVD Player. What's the point of owning a movie, if you can't watch it on your big screen?
The idea of buying it at low cost, without having to leave my home or wait for it to ship is a good one. But its useless if the buyer is so restricted as they can not watch it on their own terms. This is where Movelink fails.
Piracy is stealing and I can't say I support it. But I am also a firm believer that if you buy it, you own it. That does not mean you own it enough to give out to everyone you know, as they should pay for their own copy as well. But I do feel you should own it enough, to watch it as you like... So I do support anyone who find away to remove their "codes" so people who have bought them, can watch them freely.

its not piracy if you legally own the media and crack its DRM, its just legal fair use.
ps: i should not that i have zero respect for the DMCA and i will copy any and all media i own for personal(read non pirate) use as granted to me via US Copyright laws established long before the DMCA.
