said by Noah Vail :Over here...... NV I hope it was clear to everyone that the 45mbs symetrical was to each condo/apartment building and not to each user. So some subset of users(how ever many is in each separate building) SHARE that T3 microwave link. Not that that isn't going to deliver them great service. It just isn't what the headline seems to imply.

The company uses a microwave dish receiver mounted on each building, which can be connected to more traditional Ethernet cabling to route the high-speed Internet service to invididual units -- -- Join Red Room Forum BLOG tkjunkmail.blogspot.com My Web Page |

it's fully symmetrical even though it's shared! Really, for whatever it costs, I'd bet that certain times of day you could get almost that full speed if it's properly switched. |

Seems muddy in the article. If you're the only subscriber, it looks like you'll get some nice speed, until they get more subscribers:
quote: We're going to control it; in some cases, how should I say, we're going to let you step up to 45 Mbits," Eisenman said.

Here's the thing... 2,400 condos? People complain on here that news about FIOS, which is available to millions of people isn't "news" since it isn't available to THEM. I wonder if the same people will be bitching about this since it only services 2,400 people.
Probably not. But anyway, good for them! It's good to see someone getting a glimpse of the light.

but seriously.. microwave dish receiver, does that mean it's coming from the same satellite as tv(ie huge ping times/lag)? -- [Sig removed by Administrator: Signature can not exceed 20GB] |

| reply to MxxCon it says this in the article: "adjunct to DirectTV" which could mean that it's either part of their dishes, but I really doubt it. I think (hope) they mean terrestrial based microwave link (would they not have said sat. link???) which would make more sense. regular microwave links don't have nearly as much latency as a sat. links.
I wonder though, if these condo's are now "locked in" to this service provider and would not be able to get, say fios, or a faster cable deal (eventually). |

| Doesn't realy matter if they can keep the speed up with FIOS. Yeah, it's a shared link technology in a M.U.D., but it's far faster than what you can get with a standard ISP, (Especally upload speed.) They just need to keep their speed equivalent or higher to any FIOS deployments in the area, and at a lower price. |

| 45 Mbps symetrical shared is still good
Cable Modems running on 256QAM downstream see 38.8 Mbps shared. Upstreams running on 16QAM only see 10 Mbps shared. It works because not everyone is constantly uploading/downloading at the same time. 45 Mbps symmetrical is faster than Cable, and even though its shared it should still be faster, unlike Cables asymmetrical architecture. |

Though remember that you can download at 45 someone has to be able to send you the data at the same speed to get full results. The backbone isnt there yet you still wont see those speeds, but it is still a good deal. |

I could definately handle 10/10! 45/45? Yeah, I would suffer with it... -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

the cool thing about microwave is that it is easy to order up more bandwidth. we have microwave at work (7mb symmetric) and are able to get up too 100mb symmetric in about and hour just by placing a phone call. |

But not in one of those "people piles" they are servicing. Most of the complexes they serve have at least 1000 units minimum, perhaps 1500-2000 people.
Also important to know, usually when a complex cuts a deal like that, the cost is usually built into the rent. If you want your own DSL, you wind up paying twice.
I also had a WISP here a few years ago. Good service, 3Mb/3Mb up until another antenna from another provider popped up in the line of sight.
I am not downloading massive mp3's or streaming video, so a low-end DSL $14/Mo. account is what I switched to, and no need to pay a cent more. |
