That would really suck that your taxdollars go to pay for it and they limit it to educational and businesses only. It's time to startup a vague .com and get the $20 per month wi-fi. |

What an absurd waste! Can the government set up a distribution network to deliver cheap milk too? |

Heh. Excellent post.
On a more serious note, though, that sounds like WAY too much for annual operation costs. I'd say operating that kind of network shouldn't cost more than a fifth of that. Sounds like the telecoms are trying to charge the plan out of existence to protect their existing biz model.
Also, why not make it publicly available? Sure, you'd have to impose some limits to make sure 5 guys playing games and streaming video didn't eat all the bandwidth, but you have to do that already anyway--unless you think business users are never going to use the connection for anything but email.
Last but not least, this is definitely a step towards replacing cellular networks with data networks. All the better. |

| Smallest state of the union...
But it still has a landmass of more than 4000 kilometers squared. In comparison, that is about the same amount of landmass that covers the Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rhode Island gets it's population density from just Providence alone, which has an MSA Population that's larger than the actual states population (1/6th of that in an area that's about 50km squared). Don't be fooled by RI's small size compared to other states, it's still a big project to wire an entire city.
On another note, huray for RI! Providence is a pretty cool town, and one of the best places in the US to live if you like that "small town feel". -- Cheers, Stephanie - www.GlitterFaerie.com |

| Well, I won't be impressed until they get wireless broadband out to Block Island--that's part of RI also, but I bet they're not including it.
Not having this available for general consumer use is bogus. If you're only willing to spend $20M you get what you pay for. Easy to promise 1 Mb/s speeds if only a few cops and schools are using it... (And just think, those cops sitting in speed traps only need 100 minues to download a movie to watch. |
