The Phone line is needed

The Phone line is needed for DTV to pull information off the box, IE: What PPV were viewed. Without the phone line the info sits on the reciever and DTV cannot charge you. have 22 movies listed on my reciever (PPV) that I have NEVER paid for

Not one connected..... No problems

I've had Directv for 3 years now. 1 PVR and 3 regular boxes. Not one is hooked up to a phone-line. I haven't had 1 problem with Dtv. All the boxes get there updates. The only thing I can't do is order PPVs via the remote. If I want a PPV I just go online and order. No problems.

As in a previous post. The CSRs all state that they prefer that it be connected but it is not necessary.

You do need a phone line...

During the inital setup, you will need a phone line -- however, past that, you do not. The inital setup does not let you setup custom modem init strings that is required to use a PPP connection to any internet connected device.

I have a serial cable which plugs into the back of one of my computers, and have the PPP server turned on -- the box is allowed to dialout to the net and do it's thing..

We have a winner. You have seen the light my friend. It IS a shame, however, that we have to know so much to accomplish something so trival as a firmware update. But hey, ain't it nice to save that $$??

Can someone help me understand?

Why don't DirecTV and diSH go to high speed connections? Why are they sticking with these old dialup connects when there is so much speed to be had?

Folks, you DON'T NEED THE PHONE LINE!

Go google for "DirecTivo serial cable" and you'll see that you don't need a phoneline for the DirecTivos (SD or HD). Both of mine are setup that way. Even during setup, the simple dial prefix will go out the serial port and utilize your broadband connection.

THIS DOES WORK FOLKS!
