Gotta say - jacking up prices on your primary money making product with the objective of driving customers to a product you don't even offer yourself is a real stroke of brilliance!!! I guess they intend to be a content only company. |

AOL as a ISP is failing and will continue to fail as everything they offer, you can already get for free.
Netzero & even Netscape (own by AOL) offer dial-up for 9.95 and there are some who even now offer for less.
Their only real hope now, would maybe to lower their prices (big time) and offer AOL free as a package deal in another company (Verzion DSL, ATT Online, Charter Cable, ect...). -- Welcome to The Internet my friend. My wife sells AVON and she delivers Independent World Television |

Apparently, they still have 18.6 million subscribers left (in the US at least, don't know how many outside of the US). According to ISP Planet they're still the largest ISP in the US ( »www.isp-planet.com/research/rank···usa.html ). However, if they continue to lose subscribers at this rate, they won't be the biggest ISP for long. I only hope that one day I am valuable enough (or have enough dirt on) the company I work for that I can still hold my job after losing 3 million customers a year. |

I agree that AOL should offer their services as a premium package for some users ($5/mo), or as an addon to RoadRunner's RRlite package which is priced at $30/mo. TimeWarner needs to get AOL and RR to play nicely and both companies can benefit. I've never been a fan of AOL, but there are people who use the internet and have absolutely no clue of what they're doing, and AOL is of use to those people. A service like AOL is great at bringing new users to the internet. They need to capitalize on that. -- |-In a fascist government, National Security ALWAYS overrides Personal Freedoms.-| |- »www.lp.org/issues/issues.shtml -| |

Aol was handy at it's inception. It was one of the first national providers which meant that when my daugher moved after college she could share my account without cost. |

AOL will milk the dial-up customers for as much money as they can for as long as they can. They will retain millions of customers for many years to come. This allows them a lot of time to switch the focus of their business to something else. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have an inkling of what they can move into as an ongoing business. Everything they are doing is merely "ME-TOO" enterprises. -- -- Join Red Room Forum BLOG tkjunkmail.blogspot.com My Web Page |

If AOL wants out of the dwindling dial-up market, they should simply pull the plug. Sure, it's easy to pick on AOL for being the Internet on training wheels, but a lot of people got their first Internet experience on AOL. Like it or not, AOL is responsible for a good amount of the early success of the Internet.
What I can't believe is that despite years of people moving away from dial-up, that they haven't been able to really make a go at doing something else. Sure, lots of people will never, ever use AOL for a variety of reasons, but even discounting those non-users, you'd think the company would try to maintain some sort of business.
How can such a large company simply let their business slip away and (apparently) do very little to stem the tide? |

I still find folks unaware they can BYOC (Bring your own connection) and get lower priced AOL until they can migrate all their email contacts that they've a new email address with another ISP. Most larger ISPs offer 800# dialup for extra for travelers and if you can use a browser, you can login about anywhere. AOL doesn't offer anything new or unique; just the marketing that you think they do.

I have to agree with everyone, AOL SUCKS! The days of dial-up is long gone for me. When AOL had the text based RPG's like FED and all that, I really enjoyed it, but that was like 10 years ago.
IF they need help pulling the plug on there crappy service I am sure that alot of us here can help them turn off the switch!
good bye and so long! |

The FASTEST WAY for a company to lower its price is for customers to avoid it. but I CANNOT understand-aol employees or stockholder-WHY would someone pay that kind of $$ for dialup service, when you could get DSL package & faster speeds at a lower price,*¿ô -- I try to be friends with everyone, wary of a few, & will always be an enemy to some reguardless of what we do

About the only thing I ever liked about AOL was how many suckers populated the service. Used to hang out at a friends house whose parents subscribed to the service, where we'd spend hours phishing for accounts, perusing other peoples emails, and flooding adult-topic chat rooms (this was ohh around '96).
As an ISP, I've never understood what people found so 'great' about it. Busy lines, slow speeds (even for dialup), hangups for idling, overpriced, and a client loaded with advertisements are hardly appealing features :S |
