Rip Off

I wonder what the 'lease upgrade fee' will be.

DirecTV HD DVR

BFD... It will not be TiVo. I will wait for the Series 3 TiVo and switch back to cable. I thought they would have learned their lesson with the poor excuse of a DVR in the R-15 model. Dropping TiVo was one of the biggest mistakes DirecTV has made.

Re: Rip Off

And yes it will be a ripoff -- I can just see them charging $199 for an exchange -- and you owned the old one and don't own the new one...

Re: DirecTV HD DVR

I think if they didn't have the NFL Sunday Ticket deal they would be in trouble. I've not upgraded to HD yet, and I'm putting it off largely because I know this box will be a bug-filled pile when released, and I don't want to pay whatever ridiculous price-tag they put on it....

I'm with you on this one... I switched back to DirecTV from Dish because of TiVo. I have an HD-TiVo now and will not "upgrade" to the mp4 version. But the new TiVo may be enough for me to switch away from DirecTV and back to (gasp) cable.

I just left DISH for comcast (heaven help me) because of the "lease upgrade fee" for their HD-DVR - $299. Yes, $299 to upgrade AND YOU DON'T EVEN OWN THE BOX!

I told them I would stay if they waived the "upgrade" fee, but they wouldn't do it.

Not upgrading isn't really an option, unless you don't want any of the programming that is ONLY available in mpeg4 - local HD channels over the sat, all new HD programming.

It's too bad, 'cause I liked DISH, but comcast now offers more for less.

Re: DirecTV HD DVR

Glad I have cable, it's cheaper, I have a HD DVR that actually records true HD not HD Lite, and if it dies I just trade it out at the local cable office. DirecTV and DishNetwork used to lead in technology and price, but they don't anymore. I switched awhile ago, and I won't be going back anytime soon.

Mediacrap

I wish we had more options where we live. Fact is that since Mediacrap services our area cable is not even a viable option. I've seen OTA programming with a better picture than Mediacom. With that said no matter how bad the box from Directv is it still can't be as bad as Mediacom.

And how much...

I was with DirecTV and was pretty happy until I purchased my new HDTV. I was excited and wanted to get the most out of it. I called DirecTV and inquired about an HD-DVR. $11.00 more a month with HD Programming - not bad.

$600 for the receiver (!!!) but they were going to give me a discount - only $499 and I don't own the receiver.

No thanks and never again. I cancelled DirecTV and went with Brighthouse. Couldn't be happier!

Screw DirecTV.

Cable? Cheaper?

Cable is cheaper? Really? The $72/month I pay DirecTV is much less than what I'd have to pay Comcrap for the same service.

I'll go back to Comcrap first

If they have a hefty fee for upgrading (which I would consider a downgrade without tivoware) I'll spend the extra money and go back to Comcrap.

The money I'm saving with DirecTV would go right out the window with new equipment fees. Still, Comcast charges $10 in DVRs fees PER DVR plus $7 base rental per DVR, plus deposit. I use 2 HD DVRs so that would be $34 just in rentals and fees from Comcast for just those two boxes, not including the higher programming fees and horrid quality (which is why I left for DirecTV is the first place). At over $400 per year in Comcast rental fees, it wouldn't take long to pay of any DirecTV equipment fees. I'll wait and see what happens with DTV's price and HD programming additions.

Also Verizon is deploying FIOS here so in a year or so we should have FIOS TV available. Choice would be nice.

Re: Cable? Cheaper?

No doubt...In my area cox cable has no HD Brodcasts at all, no NFL Network, and cost me $30/month more than Direct TV. Plus with direct I get all the NFL Games. If you are to cheap to shell out a few hundred bucks every now and then, then satellite isn't for you. For me, a few hiundred bucks this summer is no big deal for the amount of entertainment that the lovely little box will bring me. It is a goo dinvestment in my book!

But how much do you pay monthly for that HD DVR?

What?

I am confused. You pay directv all this money and you dont own the equipment? Now that is just stupid. I guess there is a sucker born every day.

Re: Rip Off

I left Dish because they would not waive a $60.00 fee to install an new dbs antenna that would get me locals. The locals were not available when I first signed up.

Re: DirecTV HD DVR

Chicago market I pay $ 5 for the HD service, and I pay $11.99 or $12.99 for the DVR.

The only thing I'm pissed about is I had to have my box replaced because the hard drive went bad, but it's starting to happen again. It's not like I'm carrying around the box, it's in the same place and well ventilated.

I don't know if it's a Motorola issue or a Comcast issue.

It will be nice when service providers stop waiving any fees for those that simply "bitch" and want it waived.

There are those that purchase the service and pay their monthly rates like everyone else for service provided. Then there are those that feel more important than the rest of us and "entitled" to something that the general public isn't.. Those people are the ones that help keep rates higher for the rest of us. Why? Does anyone think that those discounts come out of no where? nope. These discounts are an expense to the company and they have to come somewhere.

Everyone else, please thank these "I want it free" or "waive this or I am leaving" people in part for why your rates do go up in a competitive world.

DTV needs to fix the bugs

They need to fix the bugs in their current DVRs before releasing any more bug-ridden crap.

Specifically the R15. I havent made the jump to HD yet, but this R15 is horrible in its operation. Very laggy with FF/REV, and lots of little bugs that really make the viewing experience SUCK. They keep sayin the next update will fix it.. yea right..

Cant wait for FiosTV.. my 2yr contract sucks tho.. sigh.. owell.. mebe vz will buy it out! laff

Re: DirecTV HD DVR

Speaking of NFL ticket... if some of these new Telecom laws get through (depending on the lobby of the week's version) there is talk that Cable would have to give up any exclusive rights they have to "sports" programming and that they can't keep them from the satellite carriers.

Why is it right that NFL is able to make an exclusive agreement with Satellite? (And yes, I know one is the NFL and the other is Cable, but it just goes to show how there is no intent to level the playing field for real honest competition.)

And back to the DVR.
