| Not going to be on the "internet"
All of the TV data is going to be on the local network of the internet provider. Meaning if you have Verizon Fiber, you have Verizon TV. I highly doubt that anyone is going to be able to convince their investors that they can provide the QOS to provide HD over the internet. |

"and beefing up the Internet's capacity to prevent that will be expensive."
You are in the buisness of providing data as fast as possible next to your competitor, stop bitching about costs and go the extra mile for the customer. You will only benifit yourself (your pocketbook) if you refuse to upgrade which is standard and expected! |

I couldn't tell if that era was more about technological innovation, or a social experiment testing users' patience. |

Who can trust either? The AP, or ISPs?
Meanwhile, at least this AP article has a name attached to it. |

1 edit | said by DaSneaky1D :Show me a congested OC3 and I'll buy that QoS is needed. You do realize that an OC3 is only 155Mbps right? That's enough bandwidth for roughly 10-20 simultaneous IPTV streams. You'll want QoS if you are an IPTV subscriber and your getting dropped frames and freezing pictures because all your 1's & 0's aren't getting to you in time or are congested. |

Well with the IPTV there will be a converion to a higher SONET system but the point you're making still stands. A system can be congested if there's enough traffic across it. Even more so with time sensitive high volume. |

| reply to Cod I'm quite aware of the bandwidth an OC3 has. But to impose a two tier network structure just to appease IPTV users is not the way to go.
In order for QoS to work effectively, either arbitrary limits will need to be set, or a congested link will need to be present. If a link is not congested, then the only way to prioritize traffic is to queue "undesirable" traffic by imposing artificial limits. -- :: my trivial ramblings :: |

I'm not advocating a two tiered platform at all but I do think some sort of QoS needs to be implemented in some fashion to provide an uninterrupted TV stream. |

Ahhh pardon me Mister DaSneaky..... New York City currently is fiscally very healthy with a budget surplus..... this city is run very well considering it's size and population. if you mean private corporations that are headquartered here then that's another thing totally independent of New York.... |
