Pricey

600 terabytes were downloaded from the Xbox 360 Live network during E3. At this price it would cost $1,080,000,000!

Africa will never....

Africa will never see anything good or decent at those prices. It's a real pity the entire world, including most of the USA couldn't be wired like Japan cheaply, and reliably.

I think the reason that broadband is so cheap in Japan, Korea, etc. is that there are a lot of people crammed in a relatively small location.

On the other hand, the reason broadband in the US isn't cheaper is the greedy telecoms...

hmm

So it would cost $30 - $40 to go to an online store and order a product?

that is outrageous!

way too much for that volume of data. It would be cheaper to send a dvd/tape backup image of something. could they not "cache" large portions of information and then serve it closer to their intended destinations??? this would seem one of the only solutions. at those prices, they could probably solve starvation in many places. sorry, but food and water are more important than a gig of nearly any information, unless of course that gigabyte of info somehow contained the cure for AIDS.

2 Africas

I wonder how this breaks down between the politically "free-er" countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Kenya and Zambia and the rest of the continent.

Another point to consider... South Africa happens to be the country where Thawte, Inc. (the #2 security certificate vendor) is headquartered. Things can't be that bad!

Nigeria Email Scams

And the sad part of this story is that all that bandwidth is being used to send those darn Nigeria Email Scams.

Oh now this is funny, its perfectly acceptable to say the US sucks but god forbid someone calls people out on it. Sorry for not spouting the company line.

Basic needs

Most of africa doesn't have the basic needs of food, water, and shelter for its occupants, so why is $1,800/GB data costs an issue?

So?

How do our costs compare to South Korea's? (Or put another way, why aren't they comparing the worst costs to the best?)

Average price is a little off.

In America we pay for unlimited connections. I think sbc is around $15 a month for 3mbit. People download hundreds of gigabytes on such a connection.

Re: Basic needs

I was thinking the same thing. I would also, like to see how much of inhabited Africa is wired. Lots of Africa is rain forset, or hut towns. These are places that obviously have little to no need for internet conenctivity.

Maybe when the genocide stops...

telecom corporations will be willing to set up shop and make it cheap. So long as warlord states continue to operate making it unsafe to deploy anything nothing will change.
