Comments on news posted 2006-05-25 16:18:57: After one analyst predicted AT&T would scrap their current "Project Lightspeed" plans (FTTN, VDSL2 to the home) for something that could deliver more bandwidth, AT&T insisted to us nothing had changed, and that pair bonding and compression would deli.. ..

I'd love it if they decided to go with FTTH. I'd sign up as soon as available. It would be a future proof connection.

I'd say they are more than just friends.

Verizon proved the concept. SBCatt is doing it's usual follow-the-leader dance. Since they don't compete with each other, wouldn't it be nice if they banded together to drive the cost of FTTH/P down enough to make it viable for general overbuilding? Now that would finally bring real competition head-on with cable, and the myth of "consumer choice" might actually move to the reality-based world.

By the way, SBCatt has been quietly installing FTTH to new developments for awhile now. If true, this is really just an expansion of that.

Now they're starting to get it... They should've done this from the start like Verizon and be done with it.

Of course...

Like FTTH wasn't always in the plans?

Maybe not right now, or even soon, but FTTH was always going to be "lightspeed2" and everyone knew it. They were just trying to save money for a while until costs dropped.

Maybe it will be sooner rather than later if they are having architecture problems like hinted at, but even "sooner" FTTH would probably be 2008...

AT&T's plan "could" be uncompetitive?

"Forbes quotes analyst Tom Watts who says AT&T's Lightspeed architecture may be "experiencing challenges" and if deployed could be un-competitive"

Ummm..hello? Anybody home at AT&T?

It ALREADY is uncompetitive.
The cable co's are ALREADY delivering video and HSI with some delivering up to 15,000k HSI service and VOIP as well.

According to reports..AT&T's project lightening bolt misses it's target by a mile and strikes AT&T's corporate HeadQuarters instead and will only deliver 6MB HSI.

What kind of a new and upcoming service is that which is already Cable (and verizons fios's) yesterdays news?

It is the news from a company that is sadly very desperate and that desperation is the reason that AT&T now decides they are above the law and don't need franchise agreements in order to get this very sad "next generation" project out to anyone who cares to even take it.

One can only wonder what new things they have on their drawing board? A partnership with AOL to offer free AOL dialup CD's maybe?

AT&T management, it's time once again to admit your failures and follow..instead of lead companies like cable operators and Verizon. Get out of the courtrooms where you're suing communities instead of signing franchise agreements and start running that FIOS to the home before it's too late.

Free at Last!

About freaken' time. However, the pissed off Verizon investors will join with the (newly minted) pissed off at&t investors & form Vultron....Defender of the Uni......oh, got carried away there.

Actually, this is probably what they wanted to do all along. They just had to have a face-saving suitable amount of time to pass. This should be good.

You mean something like a national communication system? I wonder if that could work?

How about this slogan, ""ONE POLICY, ONE SYSTEM, UNIVERSAL SERVICE"? The holding company would be AT&T and the system could be called, "The Bell System" after Bell the inventor of the telephone. It's logo could be a bell, brilliant.

Well, it's abundantly clear that fiber is the future. I think AT&T was fooling themselves thinking light speed could deliver the bandwidth needed for today's and tomorrow's bandwidth hungry uses. To dump billions into what really amounts to nothing more than a stopgap measure would be foolish.

The plus side, if AT&T decides to go the FTTH route, it will give some validation to Verizon's Fios deployment, keeping the stockholders there at bay.

The existing copper plant nationwide is pretty much obsolete. DSL is/was a stopgap measure until FTTH could be rolled out.

It's fun living in the future, isn't it boys and girls???

No money

That is considering they don't declare chapter 11 first.

Their Debt is getting HIGH and investors are Running scared.

But don't worry all the Exec's are still getting their millions in pay.

Re: HD

If they dont follow suit with verizon, this project will be the biggest failure ever. No one wants 6 meg by 1 meg connections, you can get a 100/100 in barbados, and it is an island in the middle of the ocean!

The plan on running fiber to the house where it is new build. They are already doing this in certain areas of San Diego. It would be to costly in certain areas to do all fiber so they are most likely going to run both their version of FIOS and their project lightspeed....

Re: HD

Exactly. They have to invest in a system that will last them another 100 years, and FTTH is the ONLY way to achieve that. 5-10-20 years from now, all TV will be HD, and we'll all expect to get HD channels to all 3 or 4 of our TVs. Only FTTH can provide that.

Glad to see that ATT is waking up though.

Funny..

Funny that they can get 20-25Mbps at 4,000 feet using VDSL2, yet using ADSL they can barely get me 3Mbps at that distance.

Somehow I think "rose colored glasses" is a term that might be appropriate here. Perhaps even "beer goggles."

i don't care...

i don't care who gets me fiber to the home as long as i can get it... so far in my location (san diego) it isn't happening... either the cable/phone companies have forgotten that we as a technological center exist or they've decided that smaller, shittier markets need it more... but however it gets here, i'll sign on... anything right now would beat out cox, unless cox endeavors to try and bring ftth to me...

Not only Mulling...

AT&T (SBC) is not only mulling Fiber to the Premise (FTTP) they are doing it. I just recently moved to a new house and won the lottery -- our house is FTTP. It's great, but it seems that they aren't selling any services beyond what I could get while I was on DSL.

The service is great. I've had no problems. The best part is that the service is 3 Mbs SYMMETRIC for 19.99/mo (1 yr contract).
