Comments on news posted 2006-05-31 18:28:52: An AOL user who ditched AOL when he signed up for a real broadband provider was convinced to stick around for the company's $4.95 BYOA (bring your own access) plan, thinking this meant unlimited access. ..

Raised rates?

It's nice to know that AOL finally accepted that it can no longer get any new customers, so they had to raise rates to earn more profit. The price of 3 unlimited T-1s with 99.999% up time seems a little high for a service that doesn't even connect you to the internet.

Now that's classic. And there is no way the poor schnook can wriggle out of it. Ignoring the legalese is not a defense. The only hope he has is if there are other AOHell users incurring the same ridiculous charges, then maybe he can go to his state AG and file a complaint to force AOHell to be more upfront about those kind of charges.

I didn't see anything about BYOA in the story

it sounds like they just gave him the standard 3 hours for $4.95 service.

Final Words

For those who still care but didn't read the article on the Trib. He is getting a full refund. At first they only offered him a $200 credit on the money owed. Then he turned to the press(Chicago Tribune in this case), and within 1 phone call the whole amount was credited back to him.

Yeah the CSR's never lie.

why

truly why still pay for an byoa when you could get DSL for almost just as much. however my G-ma is a AOL user and still on dial up because it's 10 some odd dollors a month and she only go's on to check her email and jokes her friends send her. i dont get it.

Just Another Reason to HATE AOL!

Even if the customer is getting a refund, the fact that AOL has the gall to charge a per minute access fee that could add up to that much, is ludicrous! From the story it seems apparent that the sales rep who persuaded the user to stay either accidentally or purposely gave him the wrong information. I don't trust AOL for a second, so I tend to believe that the misinformation was purposeful. I don't know how much it actually cost AOL to allow access to its resources to people who already have their own internet connection, but my bet is it can't be very much. In any case, AOL continues it's propensity to drive away customers (and prospective customers), and to hasten its certain demise.

READ THE FINE PRINT!

I used to work for EarthLink, and got plenty of calls/correspondence from people that didn't read the fine print. They would say things like I didn't agree to my account being acquired by EarthLink, so I don't owe anything. SURE YOU DO...you used 100 hours of dialup last month. Hopefully this will be a lesson to all, read the fine print.

I hope AOL gets every penny, they were WELL within their rights to charge this dumbass every cent.

I agree with the guy from earlier,

I agree with the guy from earlier, I worked as an AOL retentions rep for some time and can tell you that they are fanatical about recording every call and making sure that the customer hears that disclosure, and also just in case you weren't paying attention they email (no way you could miss that AOL email if you were signed on that long) and snail mail you the results and of your call and the terms of the plan you signed up for. I do have to say that most of the times when people were over billed it was their own fault, however AOL usually reverses charges the first couple times you make mistakes. this is probably the customers fault, aOL customers are not exactly the brightest bunch.
