| "Killer"?
I don't think there will be an iPod killer. They have the product everyone measures themselves against both in the product and the marketing. Features of a new product from a new competitor won't "kill" the iPod. At most, it would cause Apple to consider additional features. -- Tweaked your connection? | Mail Parse | Speed Converter |

I think most people are starting to call any portable MP3 player an Ipod. It's like when most people call any DVR a Tivo. Lets see what the price point is and then we'll see if this can compete with Ipod. |

| Some competition for iPod would be nice
Getting some legitimate competition for the iPod would be nice. It might cause Apple to drop the price point from the very high levels it is at. And maybe even make it so that the iPod could be serviceable when a new battery is needed instead of being a virtual throwaway like Apple wants. -- -- Join Red Room Forum BLOG tkjunkmail.blogspot.com My Web Page |

| You can replace the battery. It just isn't as easy as plugging in headphones.
I don't see how MS making a MP3 player will be any competition for Apple. MS is a software company and they have not had success whenever they try to make hardware. They stopped making Wi-Fi products and the Xbox has lost huge amounts of many for them.
Apple has lots of competition from virtually every other company in the world. Despite people constantly claiming that the iPod is overpriced, none of the hundreds of companies that make MP3 players seem to be able to get their act together and create something with the same features, size, ease of use, etc for less money. |

| It's only a matter of time.
Apple is naive to think that no one else will come out with a good player. And when that player can get music from every music store, it will crush the ipod. Apple has set it up so the ipod and itunes are locked to each other. This of course is great while they are a monopoly, but if someone else makes a player that works with every other music store and can gain a decent market share, the ipod will topple. |

| Of course if you purchase the MP3 player that is the subject of the story, you are exclusively tied to Microsoft. You can not play the songs on any other computer, except one running windows. At least with Apple solution, you are not tied to a single opertaing system. Talk about vendor tie-in/lock-in. -- Have fun, enjoy. |

Okay... while not really an mp3 player it was also touted as a possible iPod killer. |

| Music is overrated!
Plus, with all the bullshit DRM, Copy Protection & proprietary formats(and RIAA Big Brother tactics), I fail to see the lure of these devices any more.

Show me a device that will play anything - anywhere... without all the baggage and we can talk! I'm not saying it's for the better, but DRM is the direction this industry is going. I think it would be very doubtful any company would come out and market a device that can play anything...as it would probably be sued into oblivion within the week. |

| reply to dadkins I agree w/ dadkins. A friend of mine recently flew to California and she claimed "you would have thought they were handing out free ipods at the airport."
I found this quite humorous. Ipod is a nice product but they are not for everyone. Id rather have my hearing unobstructed and pay attention to what is going on around me. Call me old fashioned but I like to read when on a flight, bus, train, etc. Sometimes I even write. |

| reply to dadkins music is not overated, and carrying your laptop around for playing music or whatever conjures up the image of you using a 1984 motorola cell phone to tell your mommy when you will be home for dinner. the ipod is a phenomena, there are many reasons why it is market leader. only when a product comes along that fends off greedy music companies, is none propriety to o.s or platform ,can be easily customized, ie able to update to a more powerful battery, replace a hard drive, install an open operating program, change the screen ect. then and only then you may have something that may come close to taking apples market share of the portable music player. a generic pmp for ogg, aac, mp3, mp4, rm,wmv, mv4...... |

| reply to Pictor Guy No, I'm saying that if I buy music/video from iTunes/whomever, it is laden with crap! PASS!
I would like to see a player *AND* service that will sell plain vanilla music that can be transferred to where ever and whenever I choose. Burned as many times as I see fit! Played on whatever device I wish, when I choose to.
As long as xxAAs have their dirty paws in the media I may want, I don't want it! I shall rip and download to this laptop, anything I see fit!
Music today no longer interests me anyways. It's all crap! Video on an iPod or some other scrawny screen is a joke! Having to have licenses to listen to or watch media is not for me!
Now, when this new toy's specs are released and a few reviews are conducted, I may have a look.
Plus, it isn't an Apple! I may just get a PSP, screw it! -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

That is what they said about Netscape back around 1993-95 when Microsoft first created the abortion called Internet Explorer (the Kill Netscape Project according to certain Microsoft Mail Product Support people) that was to become the most used (and abused) browser in the world today.
Back then no one really thought that Microsoft would ever kill Netscape, especially those of us who were working on trying to support Microsoft Mail in a 20000 people environment, and not getting any of the promised support and updates from Microsoft. Just goes to show if you have enough people, money, and control certain aspects, you can do whatever you want.
And if there are any legal issues, the lawyers will tie up the courts while they release mod after mod that gets tested using taxpayer $'s until it works right without legal entanglements. -- I am not lost, I find myself every time. |

| Zen vision m?
Personally I think Creatives Zen Vision M is blowing Apple out of the water for the MP3/Video category. First, Creatives display is years ahead with thousands of more colors... anyone who views each side by side will go for the zen display.. Apple still does not support FM and the Zen will do regular AVI, XVID and mpegs unlike the Ipod video that has to be transcoded to a special codec. The only problem with the vision is that Creative has crappy distribution support and they can't keep them in stores.. they are selling like hotcakes and are often out of stock in their own online store.. Apples flash drive the shuffle also has to be the worst POS since it is just that.. a shuffle with no ability to play folders, ID3 tags etc.. my 1 gig muvo TX is smaller, lighter, has FM and can play folders, tags and records for less money then the shuffle.. Please somebody explain how apple is so superior with less features for more $$.. I don't get it. |

Can your iPod play HD video? Can your iPod rip video and/or music? Can your iPod post here on DSLR from anywhere?
If you feel the need to listen to today's music, I'm sorry! I have hours of recorded TV shows, ripped DVDs, and a shitload of other goodies on my laptop. Yes, music too!
What does your iPod have on it? Uh huh.
iPods are a fad. Just as the Walkman was, then the Discman. All I do is laptops, because I like variety(and quality). Maybe some day, you and I will be on the same plane and you will be listening to music, I will be enjoying whatever I want! In whatever format you can imagine. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |
