| | Fired? Why does everyone here believe that AOL fired this CSR? They said that they did, but they also say that this type of activity is not permitted. Somehow I think this guy's job is safe. | |

| | aol You guys haven't heard the best one. One of my clients tought aol was the internet. I obiously advised the person so he would know better. I also called aol myself to cancel for this customer after setting up DSL for him and letting him test drive it. He never looked back and thanked me, even gave me a $40 tip. I had a tough time cancelling to, i identified myself with the company i work with and that my client is canceling, obiously that wasnt acceptable so i asked the person for his first and last name so i could contact the better business bureau. This ended up not being needed because my client got on the phone and said if you dont cancel my account right now my law firm will be suing AOL...got that. | |

They had a hell of a time as well!

Maybe 7 years ago I went through the same thing Vincent went through on this recording. It took a phone call to a second rep to get them to cancel.
There software is worse than they are. It's a giant pain in the ass to get completely off a computer after some unknowing victim allows it to be installed. (I just helped four different folks "set-up" their laptops. First thing is to get all the Symantec and AOL shit off the computer so they can't install it completely)
I know a lot of poor folks will loose their jobs, and I feel bad about that but, it warms my heart to see AOL's loss of users and I look forward to the company's failure. They deserve it.

| | crazy AOL CSRs are a little obstinate, but I doubt many of them are that bad. That guy sounded like he was just goofing off and not really into the mood to keep his job anyway. AOL deserves most of the criticism they get, but that guy was so far out of line, that I don't think you can totally blame them. I really doubt they train their employees to act that poorly. | |

The rep that took the call deserved to get canned for tring to argue with Vincent. As a former rep my approch would have been to inform Vinsent about the safety and security features included and a lower price point for BYOA. Then if Vincent still wanted cancel then see ya and btw you can still keep screen name for email @ aol.com and aim for free.

McShakenPremium join:2006-02-20 Olympia, WA | Looks like business as usual for AOL A few months ago a coworker told me she just signed up for AOL (3 months free trial). I told her to cancel the service that night and gave her information on another ISP that I knew was very good (and much cheaper). When I saw her the next day, she told me her horror story about trying to cancel the service. The rep went into a tirade about her only having the service one day and that she hadnt had it long enough to see the value in AOL. She had to persist for almost 30 minutes, explaining why she didn't want to use AOL before the AOL representative relented and terminated her service. Here's the kicker, she was a customer for one day on a three month free trial, and they charged her credit card $24.99 one week after she terminated the account...
I smile every time I throw an AOL CD in the garbage...

bbrlogueLearning New Things DailyPremium join:2003-12-07 Alexandria, VA | Virtual Credit Card Number Use virtual credit card numbers for subscriptions. Most credit card issuers have this now. Citi, for example, allow the card holder to generate a virtual number with time and spending limit (.e.g for the length of the contract), but those limits can be extended, and the number can be canceled at any time. So, extend it as long as you like, and cancel the number as soon as you don't want the service anymore. Call CSR to cancel and get the pro-rated refunds if needed, but if they play hardball, just tell them good luck charging the card.

| How I cancelled AOL I told my bank to stop payment and paid $10 and signed a form for them to do so. This after AOL re-activated my account two different times, deducting money from my checking account without my knowledge. When I called in they would tell me that I called in on a certain date and requested them to do so. I was using cable internet at that time and would not pay for two ISP's regardless. They will stoop to any level to 'steal' money. | |

| | why even bother with customer care... Why even bother calling... in today's modern world of outsourced customer service and 10,000 seat call centers where employees are a dime a dozen and dont give two craps about customers what do you really expect.....
I've been through the phone cancellation procedure and it sucks, i've rarely been sucessfull over the phone, but via fax or mail i've had 100% sucess.... i guess there's no confusion over a letter or a fax, when something's put in writing and signed CANCEL MY ACCOUNT.... they arent going to fax you back or write you back saying... "are you sure, do you really want to do this? we can offer you this plan, or discount...etc"...
Here is aol's fax/snail mail cancellation info:
You may also choose to mail your request to us at: AOL PO Box 65100 Sterling, VA 20165-8800
Or you may fax your request to us at (703) 433-7283.
Seems simple enough...
