| One of the funniest threads of all time Look if you don't like windows don't use it. If windows is so bad, then why even pirate it?
If you work for a company that uses windows, you don't pay for the software anyway, the company does, when you go home...use Linux or a Mac...so really what do you care what they use at work and how much they pay?
Most of the people bitching about Windows seem to be people trying to justify why they pirate it. Face it you pirate what you consider to be sub standard software because you are both cheap and stupid. If you were not cheap and stupid you'd use a "real" OS by your standards which would be linux or maybe some would use VMS...who knows.

2 edits | Re: Yep, MS is abusing the fact that doesn't have serious competition. In all other sectors of commerce, companies try to reward their legal customers, not to frustrate them.
Apart the fact that MS treats you as guilty until proven innocent, now we have the new tactic.Until now,MS fans were replying to every complain "It was in the EULA when you bought it,so stop whining".Now that the EULA was "omitting" some details, the reply is "If you don't like it don't use it".One can never win against such mentality.Or maybe he CAN,in COURT.
Once you buy XP you have to activate it.Is this enough to prove your innocence? No.the WGA authentication tool came which made impossible to get new updates without installing it.So once again, you were proving your legal purchase. Was that enough? No.The notification tool came as "critical update".I wonder when will this farce going to end?
If MS wants to catch thieves,it would be a good idea to actually target the crackers!Like if you want to find a terrorists ,you don't send the police to search every house in the country, but you try to find hints on where they are located.
The users with pirated MS,99% of the time know they have pirated OS and the WGA is a minor annoyance for them ,until they get a new crack that will "kill" it.Only the legal customers have to live with it.Not to speak that most people with pirated Windows, don't even bother to do updates. They have SP2 and a firewall and are happy with it.
I am awaiting with hope both the decision of these 2 cases as well as the EU's imminent fine on MS :
Brussels poised to fine Microsoft »news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/5120536.stm
Someone must teach these persons to be less arrogant.University books are also often photocopied and with a much smaller market and profit gain, yet the editors haven't sent yet inspectors to make sure you 've bought the legal book.Drugs which should be prescribed by doctors are often sold without prescription at pharmacies, but the medical associations haven't yet started videotaping the pharmacy exits to make sure people buy only the drugs that don't require prescription.
If MS wants to combat thieves, then should wage "war" against street pirates, that everyone sees except MS,crack sites,XP torrents etc.But that would require to spend some money in legal actions, wouldn't it?
I have even my reserves about the real purpose of this tool.I mean,it makes more sense to think it more like a "census" tool, rather than a piracy fighting tool, for the reasons i already mentioned earlier in the differences between legal user and user of pirated Windows.
I m waiting for the next Ubuntu release that hopefully will support better my onboard audio and will migrate.

| Competition for MS Wouldn't it be great if MS did have some competition? And it would really be a slap in the face if it was open source! Wait that already exists, ReactOS. It's completely legal and open source project that's binary compatible with WinNT. I just can't wait until it's done. There is no WGA or product keys at this point, and I don't believe there ever will be. They can always use help though... »www.reactos.org
BTW this is not attempt at plugging ReactOS, it is an attempt to let others know that there is alternatives and competition in the works for MS.

| To really stop piracy, spam, and telemarketers..... To stop piracy, sell a hardware key locked to the software CD. Make the software not install unless that hardware key is plugged into a USB port or something.
To stop spam, whitelist your addressbook. If an email address is not in your address book, automatically send to bit bucket.
To stop telemarketers, same thing, if you don't know who it is, don't answer the phone.

Microsoft WGA Attracts Copycat Worm and Second Lawsuit 07.05.06
By Matt Hines Security researchers have identified a worm virus masked to appear as Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy program, while end users have filed a second lawsuit against the software giant's use of the actual program.
Workers at anti-virus specialist Sophos were among the first to unearth the worm disguising itself as WGA. Dubbed by the firm as Cuebot-K, the virus is spreading over AOL's popular instant messaging network posing as Microsoft's controversial anti-piracy software.
Sophos said Cuebot-K is registering itself on infected PCs as a new system driver service named "wgavn" that also bears the public display name of "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Notification." The virus automatically runs during system startup, and users who view the list of services offered by the threat are informed that removing or stopping the service will result in system instability.
Researchers indicated that once in place, Cuebot-K disables the Windows OS firewall and opens a backdoor to infected computers, which could potentially allow hackers to gain remote access of a machine to spy on users or launch DDOS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks.
Adding to the threat is widespread controversy over WGA that has forced Microsoft to offer an updated version of the program, a previous iteration of which some people have labeled as having spywarelike capabilities. End users looking for that update could unknowingly expose themselves to Cuebot-K, experts said.
"People may think they have been sent the file from one of their AOL IM buddies, but in fact the program has no friendly intentions, and technical Windows users wouldn't be surprised to see WGA in their list of services, and so may not realize that the worm is using that name as a cloak to hide the fact that it has infected the PC," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, based in Abingdon, U.K. "Once in place, this malware disables the firewall and opens a backdoor by which hackers can gain control over your computer to steal, spy and launch DOS attacks."
Microsoft representatives didn't immediately return calls seeking comment on the WGA-themed virus.
