Comments on news posted 2006-07-09 11:44:24: In and around Boston, cafe owners who installed wireless signals to draw customers say they also are drawing Internet users who tie up seats for hours, buy little or nothing, and make coffee shops feel like the office as they tap away at their laptop.. ..

The Best of Both Worlds

The "dilema" at hand in these coffee shops is just silly. These restaurant owners want to draw in the young, hip, tehno savvy crowd, but get upset when the customers aren't sipping down 2 $8 cups of coffee per hour. I live in this area and I have been in all of the shops in this article and I have seen these scenes played out.

A simple solution if the restaurant owners were willing to invest a few dollars into their network and POS systems would be to provide a password on the reciept that would entitle the patron to 1 hour of Wi-Fi access...at the end of the hour it shuts off, if they want to keep using the Wi-Fi then they have to purchase another beverage or food item.

I personally get upset with my boss when he tries to plan a meeting at Panera because it has free Wi-Fi and doesn't buy his team lunch (or even a cup of coffee) and then decides to camp out their the rest of the day.

If it's free, take a hike...if not

If it's free the manager should say when you can take a hike.

However at Starbucks, Borders or B&N, where I pay to use T-Mobile and others, every one of them could care less how long I hang around.

My experience at Panera (where its free) is here;

»Retail WiFi "clogging"

When using a B&N, I asked where all the power outlets were (only one was available) and the manager said pretty bluntly that they didn't want anymore because then all the laptop users wouldn't leave. As it is, most of them can only stay 2 hours as they run out of power. She said 2 hours is adequate time for anyone to finish what they need on the internet.

Gee - how cheap can folks get?

When home DSL is going for $12.95 - that's just
like 4 cup of coffee (at $3) and they can get a whole
month of DSL

Business

If you don't want the business of wi fi users, just don't offer wifi. There is a give and take with any business model.

DEAL WITH IT.
