I dobut CNN will be in print...I think the way of media is to go electronic for most services (internet or video)...and ppaers are going to move to mostly online or portable via podcast and "read" to a person...audio newspapers. |

I live in the high-speed, electronic digital world all day long. It is very pleasant to start the day with an "old-fashioned" (if you want) newspaper.

not really, there are many people out there who still prefer to just read a newspaper. Like me. I'm the biggest geek you'll ever know, i get nearly all of my content online, i'm hardcore, can code in 20 languages, build a system with a blindfold and one hand tied behind my back, yet i will STILL pick up a newspaper every once in a while.  |

While the trends are away from print, it is not very rapid. There is still room for traditional print in news delivery.
As long as advertisers want to use print, it will always survive in some form.
The news delivery "revolution" that was predicted during the bubble never occurred because everyone found out that there were only 2 news sources available from non-captives, Associated Press and Reuters. No matter what portal or news feed they used, it was all the same thing.
The value add the print press provides is in alternative and local reporting. NY Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, SF Examiner all have full time reporters on the beat providing alternative reports to the newswires. Don't want a newswire report from the White House? ok, go check out the beat reporter.
I am going to get better and more detailed coverage for example, of the Chicago train derailment in the Chicago Tribune than in the NY Times. But newswires may be adequate for the Mumbai train attack.
Fantasy Football nuts can research local team issues in the local rag much more than what a newswire can provide.
CNN was unique in its time because they went out and built a reporting corp from scratch. The peak of which was the Baghdad coverage during Desert Storm. They have been cost cutting ever since.
That captive reporting corp costs money to support and maintain. The web expects it now and for almost free. Something will have to give. |

| What I don't like about traditional newspapers...
is that too many times I see on my morning train commute people coming in with their morning newspaper, read one, maybe two articles and then just throw it all into the trash bin. Sometimes they just go straight for the sports section and throw everything else. What a waste of resources, all for just one article. |

I think the title says it all.
Newspaper subscriptions have been declining slowly since the internet has caught on. Why spend money on a paper when you can read about it for free on the computer. Newspapers have got to come up with something else they can provide because what they are doing now isn't doing enough.

every once in a while does not pay the bills for these paper, less subcribers mean less ad revenue. How about this...consider how much time you spend with the various news media in a given day...Internet, TV, radio and print give me a percentage....I bet print is really low. |

personaly i prefer a printed book or news paper over the likes of a ebook or newspaper. They all have one thing in common more difficult to read. Ive yet to see any pdf viewer that isnt slow at least part of the time to render and have a blurry effect to it. I would have to take a guess and say i can read a paperback novel in say 8 to 12 hours full novel as in 400 to 800 pages. If i had to read the same book in pdf format double that time easly.
