Now..

if only I had a video ipod Stuck on my ol nano for now.

But its good to see that they are doing this. I think Apple/iTunes will be the thing that really jump starts online renting. Like how Netflix did with online renting but via mailing a DVD.

Hopefully these companies aren't too greedy to Apple on how much to pay

HD?

If they offered them in decent bit rate HD, I'd be in. But don't think that will happen any time soon, I guess.

iTunes -vs- Movielink.com

I'm hoping they make a stake at Movielink.com and their option to buy movies can be played on normal DVD players. Movielink.com only lets you play your stuff on a PC.

Does anyone know if they can do this already?

$9.99?? Make it $2 and I'd think about it.
Wait. No Thanks. I get Netflix and at the rate I watch films, it has to be "" $2 a movie.

OT-We still need an 80Gig Nano Vidipod to store all the movies they want you to buy and access quickly. Which reminds me, just how many people really watch movies more than once? (excluding babysitting excuses and the trekkie)

I'll believe it when...

I hear it come out of the mouth of one person and one person only - Steve Jobs.

Until then, this is way, way high up on the BS/smokescreen scale for me.

A rental in the $2 to $4 range is the max it should go. Between Netflix, Blockbuster, cable PPV, etc. offering these movies, anything higher than that from iTunes and the renters would be dummies for paying it.

Agreed about the price. However, I still think it'll be a big success down the road. At first, I'm thinking iTunes/Apple will get slammed with criticism about it but still be a pioneer in that respect of bring movies to your desktop for a price (at least I know of know Mac-compatible sites for movie rentals/downloads at the current time though I'm sure there are Windows-based sites).

And people will rent the movies -- that's the thing. I agree they'd be dummies for doing it, but I have a hunch it'll be successful. Call me crazy

Hmmm...that's about half an inch wider than Keira Knightley is in real life.

Re: who cares?

Who wants to bet that you can *only* play them on the iPod? That way you have to watch the movie on the little screen, LOL.

Re: who cares?

9.99 to OWN is what he's talking about. Renting would obviously be cheaper cause who would pay 10 bucks to rent a downloaded movie. I'd say the success will be based on the quality of the movies. If they're the iPod resolution of 320x240 then I can't see a lot of people buying them. TV shows can get away with this quality because they're usually not "action" like a lot of movies are. You want a large screen for a movie but not necessarily a TV show.

You can already play the TV shows you can buy on your computer or your TV if you hook your computer up to your TV so LOL you don't know what you're talking about.

Re: Movies?

No one says they're going to be selling exclusively for iPods. Maybe they could have a higher resolution download at the same time as an iPod formatted movie. Then you can watch it on your computer at higher res or your iPod.

Steve... is it you?

FYI: $9.99 would be hilarious, a granted failure.
You can buy movies on DVD from $9, let alone that Netflix starts at $6/mo.

They have to price it at $2 or less otherwise it won't fly.

Exactly. Even $4 is ridiculously high compared to PPV which you can record.

Ummm please, stop right here. Don't start another fake 'being-first' urban legend about Apple (like CD-ROM, DVD, gigabit, Firewire etc), please.

There are numerous online movie stores out there:

»www.atomfilms.com - this one offers FREE downloads including Atomfilms Hi-Def

And of course, there are lots of free movies already available on Google Video, Veoh or other existing video sites.

"Apple's decision to implement a rental model for movies will be a major departure for the company and Jobs. Apple had been trying for months to persuade the movie studios that the a-la-carte model of buying individual titles, as the iTunes Music Store offers with music, was the way to go. The studios, however, have been fixed on offering only a subscription or rental-based model."

The movie studios are idiots.

The iTunes music store thrives even though many, many people still steal music. By giving consumers an option of buying movies online they are basically getting "Free" money that would normally be lost.

While I'm sure many here prefer piracy, there are always people that want to be legit, and currently no one wants to sell downloads to them.

If this rumor is true, I would have to imagine the other announcement is an iPod designed for movie viewing...
