| Lets hope it works
There seem to have been so many promises of "new and exciting" broadband networks over the past few years (wireless, BPL, Blimps, etc.) and none (other than FIOS) have really panned out. If Wimax finally gets off the ground then this could be huge. There is also a lot of money being funneled into both Wimax and Clearwire, so if its going to happen this is the time. -- сумасшедшая обезьяна! |

| Do it now....while the Bells are dumb and blind
Now is a good time to go for it. The Bells are still screwing around and falling behind. DirecTV and a nation wide wireless will be a nice wild card. Plenty of rural customers and some city to boot. Frankly I think they can take the rural areas by storm if they act fast. But they will have to offer 5megs or better right off the start. Not to mention WiMax better be gold. -- Thermaltake 2000a/Asus P4C-e/p4 3.4/ocz3500 2x512/WD.2x200g/raptor2x74 raid 0/ATI 9600/APC sua 1500/Logitech z-680/ Samsung 213t LCD/MX 1000 |

Yep. Back in 2002 over antitrust concerns. Back when there were people who thought there should be a limit to how consolidated and massive corporations should be in a sector. |

@qwest.net | reply to hayabusa3303 Craig McCaw started clearwire in 2004. Also, Clearwire has its own Voice service in selected markets and will be in every market at some point soon. |

Yep. Back in 2002 over antitrust concerns. Back when there were people who thought there should be a limit to how consolidated and massive corporations should be in a sector. But even today the purchase would not even be approved. Possibility of competition for the incumbents who have the politicians in their back pockets. -- FWD#: 223611 |

I'd prefer WiMax not come as a result of the merger of DirecTV and Echostar. Rather, I'd just wish somebody would enter the market.
As for speeds, anything is better than dial-up, ISDN, or satellite service. |

| Nice rumor but won't happen.
NEWS Corp. buying DTV and DTV trying to buy Echostar are not comparable. When Echostar tried to buy DTV it would have shrunk the choices for customer from 2 satellite providers to 1. That didn't fly with Justice or FCC. NEWS Corp. came in and purchased DTV and you still had 2 satellite providers. As much as some here want to believe that all mergers will get green lighted, I can tell you DTV would not get approval to buy Echostar from FCC or Justice department. It would only leave one choice of satellite providers for customers and that won't fly. -- Bush Derangement Syndrome: the acute onset of paronia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies, the presidency--nay-the very existence of George W. | dejavu all over again...
You see, satellite providers are quickly becoming the ones who are left standing when the music stops (without a chair). Or up the creek without a revenue stream.. well-- they could gouge customers with higher fees, but that's a zero-sum game, as in zero customer base.
Alot of speculation that cell phone carriers won't be 1-up'd in their own space (wireless) keep promising higher speed, lower cost wireless but are stuck between greed (rock solid greed) and a diamond minefield of tax levy authorities in the communities which they operate (that would be the hard place).
Now come along the poor beaten down satellite tv providers losing their marketshare to technology(cough, cough FIOS)... boo hoo, whoah as them, then along comes WI-Max.. and the promise of selling wireless broadband with low latency that does the side-step (texas style) around municipality fees/tax levy/usf fund (well.. maybe not usf, but can't a guy named Rupert dream).
This is why WIMAX may never see the light of day as a regular consumer product, it may become a SERVICE PROVIDER's product (robotic arms and legs) with their own authentication hand-shake protocols built-in. Dont' forget where this is heading people... your satellite receivers will become "smart two-way" equipment for security and location beaconing. So you couldn't activate a unit for your granny in FL if you live in NY without a wimax beacon finding out about it... |

Every market, eh? I highly doubt that as they don't have spectrum in every market. |

| Directv Merger
To any of you who think that Directv and Echostar will not merge, google Rupert Murdoch or "Directv Rumors". It will happen, just a matter of when. Antitrust issues prevented the last merger attempt in 2002/2003, but Murdoch is very confident that a new merger will be able to stand up the scrutiny by the FCC. You just watch. It is a matter of time. That would make one satellite television company with over 25 million customers. Not as many as combined cable providers (estimated at over 70 million), but surely the most active accounts for one company/conglomerate. |

| addendum to directv merger
News Corp already owns 38% of Directv stock. If they did not, they would not even be able to talk about a merger and Rupert Murdoch would be a sham, which if you have any brains at all, you know he is not. This merger WILL happen, but I suspect not for a few more years. |
