Comments on news posted 2006-07-29 09:34:10: The Austin (TX) City Council on Thursday approved spending up to $317,500 to test Broadband over Power Lines. The council approved GTSI Corp. to design, build, and operate a system to provide broadband Internet service over the city's power grid. ..

This test is not for broadband customers

This is purely a test for use by the city's utility departments to see if they can cut utility business costs. So any Austin,TX people reading this, you are NOT getting broadband over power lines.

Collins said the city is highly unlikely to compete with cable and DSL service.

Instead, he said, city departments will be the first users of the system for functions such as remote metering of water and electricity use and to detect problems on power lines and other equipment.

But TXU, like most utilities installing or testing BPL, is also looking at ways to install sophisticated monitoring devices to detect equipment problems in their early stages and cut repair costs.

It's for those still recovering from 6th Street, no doubt.

Austin BPL...

I have RoadRunner, but got BPL as a secondary service to host my slingbox because of the synchronous speeds. It sucks, I mean it's great for the slingbox but as primary broadband service, NOT!!! 3 Mbps synchronous, and God forbid if you care about not being a slave to the electric company and use compact flourescent lights, there is only 1 outlet in my entire 3 story house that the tech could find that it would get more than 500k down!!! Strangely it uploads at the 3 Mbps rate, but there is so much noise on the line because of the lighting that I had to make a 50 foot run from the basement to the router. I just canceled the service, I'm just happy to use the slingbox on my LAN. No thanks.

Why wouldn't you just run a brand new highly shielded line power line to your modem, or better yet just install a outlet right where your power comes in and install your modem there, then run a 50 ethernet cable to your router.

thanks for posting - this is the first time I have seen anyone post about BPL service.

I don't know if your experience is typical, but it almost sounds as if the service is not read for primetime. This is what I post for any article about BPL:

A twentieth century technology that will never be more than a niche player, if that. I don't ever expect to see a major deployment of BPL; I'm not sure there will ever be a successful, lasting deployment of BPL.

There is some activity in the forums regarding BPL, a couple of catch-all examples (which include some additional links):

»[PLC] Anyone using Broadband-Over-Powerlines?
»Any BPL customers here to report?

Its still in its infancy, but I agree that it may remain simply a niche player.
Hard to say how it will finally achieve commercially viable deployment. But the municipal services angle is one option.
