So far

I've been playing around with my new phone (T-Mobile MDA) for a few weeks now. The WiFi is really only useful if you have it at home and want a quicker connection for the web. I've read of some users overclocking it a bit and watching tv shows streamed on it from the Edge network of T-mobile, but I haven't had time to get into this yet.

Look towards Japan

IMO.
Do cell phones in Japan have wi-fi capabilities?
US will do whatever Japan is doing now in 2 years.

Re: Look towards Japan

Closer to between 5 and 10. Our phones don't all have Bluetooth yet, even.

Re: Look towards Japan

My phone - samsung i730 - has both wi-fi ans evdo access, as well as bluetooth. while having wifi is a nice feature, the drain it puts on the battery is horrendous. Battery technology has a long way to go befor fully loaded phones won't need to be charges once a day or sooner depending on how much use it has.

IP telephony

The world is moving towards ip telephony... I see this as being benificial for companies that will deploy an ip voice network in thier office buildings and want to defray the higher cost of mobile calls. Its not a seller in and off itself but for companies deploying voip and softphones, its just a short step further into the mix.

screw 'em

i say screw them, the high priced horse they rode in on and the taxing authorities who dump everyone over for pocket change to the tune of tens of millions every year!!!
they can all kiss my ass! now its our turn to take back the airwaves! wifi is FREE and it will STAY THAT WAY! They're just lucky that cell phone makers haven't gone completely proprietary making soft phones that use wifi without the cellular band and market directly to the public as some cordless phone companies have already done!
