then google might have a winner on their hands and branch out and compete with other isp's in providing wireless broadband and possibly nationwide... or it could be just a regional thing and they won't do squat with it... who knows... |

| What a concept !!!
This involves:
1. Using modern technology, but not using bleeding edge stuff.
2. Fairly thorough testing before general release.
3. Careful thought as to what the consuming public wants and needs.
4. A conscious, corporate determination to be useful first, believing that money will follow usefulness.
You know, with concepts like this, American automakers could have maintained their lead. One can only wonder what would be possible if Microsoft were to take such an approach.

Microsoft would just use it for another ripoff, as is their business model. All the traffic will bear. After all, bill isn't rich enough yet, even if he is the richest man in the world. Greed knows no bounds. |

| Not the point
The point of the article is to show us that Google's wifi plans are real and the service is actually being used (albeit by a small population.) I for one certainly hope to see them make the jump into a nationwide wifi ISP. I suppose it is a long, long, long way off, though... |

For reasons mentioned by calvoiper , and a consistently progressive approach to business, its difficult to envisison Google not succeeding at this. -- How you can make the world a Better Place |

| I certainly agree that they can succeed. I just think there are lots of states and municipalities that may not like the idea of free wifi competition. I think they may end up with tons of roadblocks locally. See Verizon's NJ battle. Different service, but same type of problem. |

| I don't really expect Google to offer the service for free, not on a permanent basis anyway. Mountain View may be an exception if only because it's home base...and a nice showcase.
Earthlink is already positioning muni WiFi (and WiFi telephony), so there is some demand for public/private partnership as well as independent competitors.
And yes, I sadly suspect you're correct in assuming the ILECs will fight tooth and nail. But in a perfect world the money they spend on lawyers and PACs, rather than innovation, might well prove their downfall.
