Some people don't want a net nanny. I wonder how many calls to tech support Mac, Linux and UNIX users make because the bloat ware they give isn't working? Some may opt to use other methods of protection. |

Really. I find that having a mac prevents them from installing c-r-a-p software on my computer. I want to install what I need, not what the ISP thinks I need.
Heck, Verizon's installer put Yahoo toolbar and messenger in my laptop. Thanks for uninstall app!
Then again, do mac users currently need antispyware, parental controls (we have them already), antivirus (well, I would like AVG or AVAST for OSX..please oh please).

| Mac users don't really need it.
When you think about it, Macs don't really need AV, parental controls come with OSX 10.4 (Tiger), I believe there is also a mac release of ad-aware now as well. Discount? Nah, you are paying for the HSI service, not for AV, and the other crap. -- Dialup is like being digitally crippled. You just can't do what everybody else can. |

As a dual-platform user, I'd like to see better Mac support from the major ISPs and from other software providers (Google, I'd like Picasa for my Mac please kthxbye). But the whole "discount for not getting the whole service" saw is as old as garbage and about as useful. As an ex-tech support rep, I heard this all the time, and it's a garbage argument. You pay for access. Anything else is just gravy. No discounts for email downtime, software, anything else. You don't use your newsgroups, I'll bet. You won't get a discount on those either. I don't like the no-Mac support situation either, but bringing the discount argument into it is just going to weaken your whole premise. -- With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. |

| I havent gotten any freebies from my ISP either (Charter) but its all crap, so who cares? I dont need the virus and spyware stuff *because* I have a Mac, and the Music Match junk they offer is worthless.
As another user says, having a Mac prevents them from screwing up my computer the way they have screwed up some people's PCs. Oh, and when I call in, I dont tell them I have a Mac, because I either get the "we dont support Macs" or my computer is blamed for their network issues, automatically. |

When you consider that mac has a 5% share of the market it should be obvious why they are being ignored. It simply costs too much to support them. Like it or not it's a Windows world. -- Correlation does not imply causation. |

I'm currently in a dual platform world myself. I have a Windows desktop that I built, and a MacBook Pro.
I use the Mac most of the time now, but still use the Windows desktop on occasion. The only thing I downloaded from Comcast (before I switched to DSL) was the virus scan software. I never used the other stuff, even though I had Windows.
All I want from my ISP is internet service.
I guess that's why they call it an internet service provider.... -- Never ask what sort of a computer a guy drives. If he's a Mac user, he'll tell you. If not, why embarrass him? -Tom Clancy |

| False advertising from Apple?
Every time I see one of those "I am a Mac" ads where the guy jumps out of the box claiming he is ready to go tackle the world I just chuckle. Its mostly true. Apple products are great, as long you keep buying them every time they release a new product and dont mind paying more for less choices. But if your really a mac guy or gal why do you want to run other stuff anyway? I like Macs and our family has a virtual museum of apple pcs but the air of universal superiority they try to profess is puzzling considering the platforms relatively narrow choices for programs, apps and above all else games compared to the windows based machines. But why exactly are comcast consumers complaining (although the article only seemed to mention one woman from berkely complaining) that they cant use a free photo or music app? Maybe they didnt know iphoto wasnt bundled in a Tiger upgrade and didnt want to buy ilife? Comcast works great with Macs. I am a PC guy and I just setup my home network and my wifes office with Mac hardware. It wasn't cheap but most PC owners know the hidden cost of using "free" bundled applications. Apple is premium line folks. Lame article, I assume the author really needed a fast tidbit. |

I've had a similar conversation with Verizon DSL before. Once I stated that I was connecting with a Mac, they shunted me off to the one Mac support rep they had (with the additional hold time). |

I have never used my ISP's portal, email service, newsgroups, parental controls, spam/virus protection or any other service aside from it's dumb pipe. It would be great if Comcast provided a "no-frills" service tier with minimal PC support and none of the extra crap.
