Latency should also be mentioned here, as it is a large piece of the Rev A upgrade. It should drop to below 100ms. -- Hail To The Redskins |

| reply to cpayne5 How is the stability? We have a Sprint EV-DO card (not Rev A though obviously) and the fluctuations in the service leave a lot to be desired. Its ok for wireless based data, but it could never compare to a real broadband solution like cable or DSL. -- "Don't steal. The government hates competition." |

This card would obviously have to sport a usb 2.0 port. Looking at the bars in the picture of the article he only had one bar and still got pretty fair speeds. I would like to see how much it is with full bars. If the USB does not become a bottleneck for the bandwidth coming in.
As for deployment of REV A. I believe it's by the end of the year since they have accelerated it.

| said by Michieru2 :This card would obviously have to sport a usb 2.0 port. no it wouldn't. USB 1.0 is 12Mbps max and the max throughput you are going to see is only 3.1mbps, but you'll get more like 700kbps so 1.0 could handle it just fine. However, 2.0 interfaces are so plentiful now they would probably only do 2.0 -- "WHEN THE LAUGH TRACK STARTS THEN THE FUN STARTS!" |

I just trialed the Sprint Novatel EVDO PC card and when you insert it in XP it reports as a "USB Controller" first, then as a "Serial Communications Device" so the fact they have an external version is not all that surprising. |

Well I been reading comments that USB 2.0 has 480mbps max transfer but in real world results you only see 48mbps max. So I would assume the same would apply to usb 1.0.
That's why I thought it should obviously sport a usb 2.0 port. |

A friend managed to download 165 gigs over VZ and 125 gigs over Sprint on his biz accounts with EVDO.
Unlimited is unlimited.
He called VZ and he told them, "I have 12 cellphones with my biz account. If you cancel my service, I'll go with T-Mobile."
"But, sir, that is a $2400 liquated damage charge."
"So? I pay $5k a month already. What's $2400?"
This guy managed to even negotiate a discount on his 12 cells for his biz with some manager that dropped his bill about $1k a month. |

While this device is sorely needed and long past due it still is not Rev A compatible so if you are lucky enough to get the upgrade in the next few months new equipment will be needed. |

said by jaxdomino :USB IS a serial interface. USB = Universal Serial Bus. Serial Communications Device = a modem, in this case it set up a COM port.
Not all USB devices are modems.
I was pointing out that the PC Cards are already using an internal USB interface, so having an external USB interface is not a big reach. |

clever hiding of numbers. if you only see a tenth of the bandwidth you'd still see 1.2mbps which is a LOT more than you'll be averaging with this card. People think they are going to see 3.1mbps but lets not kid ourselves. You'd have to be the only one on that tower in perfect conditions. -- "WHEN THE LAUGH TRACK STARTS THEN THE FUN STARTS!" |

Actually all serial devices communicate. They don't have to be modems. You are correct that all USB devices are modems, but all serial devices do communicate. It is a communications bus. Sorry, just the network admin in me came out, since I do this for a living. Not trying to dog you, just wanted to make sure no one got confused reading your post. |
