Comments on news posted 2006-08-29 16:07:36: Sprint Nextel today trumpeted the arrival of the first EVDO revision A laptop card, the Novatel Wireless S720. Unfortunately, the card isn't of much use without the upgraded network that is supposed to go along with it. ..

Great

Now can I get it without having to take out a second mortgage, please?

My suggestion would be to wait until they offer this service on a actual phone (instead of the PC card). This way you can still tether the phone to your laptop to use the EVDO, plus if you get the right plan then EVDO is free. You can also make voice calls using the phone as well.

My understanding is that tethering is an additional monthly charge?

Road Warriors will be glad to see better speeds

When Sprint starts rolling Rev A out this year and next, there will be a lot of happier road warriors who will be able to move those spreadsheets and word documents back and forth to corporate much faster. The better upload speeds will be the most appreciated change.

That is some serious insight.

"Faster speeds let people send more stuff."

As will (my personal favorite) the "ability" to make VoIP calls. I say "ability" since I have a feeling that Sprint will try and curb this activity as it eats into the cellular minutes. I can say that I have used both Skype and Broadvoice on my current EVDO Sprint phone a number of times, the only issue being the high latency causes noticeable delays making conversation difficult. 50ms would be ideal for some sweet (and FREE) VoIP action!

Verizon outright banned people from doing it when I was a customer. They also had their phones "locked" to prevent people from trying. I "believe" that some Verizon phones now allow tethering, although I believe you do have to pay extra for this. If you are planning on buying I would double check what I just told you, since I am only going off memory and a quick Google search.

So, I have to buy a new EV-DO card???

I'm with Verizon, and their second level tech support told me that all their current EV-DO cards will be able to take advantage of Rev. A when it rolls out. Have I been lied to (again)?

The lied through their teeth (and thats one reason I left them). You will need a new card/phone to take advantage of Rev A. However, Rev A. cards will be backwards compatible with current EVDO.

INCORRECT! You need a phone-as-modem plan which is IIRC $40/month, but it does include internet access on the phone which is $15/month....

No, you are incorrect. All you need is the application on your phone and the ability to connect it to your PC. Assuming you have EVDO, you are good to go. I have and use Sprint everyday and there is no charge for tethering.

For some people it works, but in general you need to pay for the plan.

Also it is possible that you be billed PER KILOBYTE.

See sprint.com for further details.

As long as you have a plan over $100 per month then there is no charge for EVDO or most other features.

From Sprint's blurb...

The Merlin S720 will initially be sold through Sprint indirect and business sales channels and online at www.sprint.com for a suggested retail price of $249.99 and as low as $99.99 with a two-year subscriber agreement. Service plans for the card currently range from $39.99 per month for 40 MB to $79.99 per month for unlimited data usage. Customers signing a two-year subscriber agreement will be eligible to receive unlimited data usage for $59.99 per month (no separate voice plan required). Sprint plans to make a variety of compatible devices in varying form factors available later this year.

No let's see them define "Unlimited".

Tethering will result in service termination, trust me.

I got away with tethering my 144k simple Sprint network, but that was because I couldnt pull down allot of data on it. EVDO will rack up the data usage MUCH faster.

I download on average around 1mb just about all the time and occasionally around 1.5mb.

The Speed is better then advertised, which is really rare for a service.
