Haha, I saw that picture like last week. But this has to be the first time I ever saw a photo in the news.
NoelC Has done quite a few photos like this and they are really something to behold. I guess to get in the news it has to be almost 50K unique views! |

It's enhanced, so for a desktop nice but for an actual astronomy shot, nothing. |

Absolutely awesome. The word even fits the bill!
Additionally, this was featured on 9/7 as the Astronomy pic of the day: »antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/rjn/apod/ap060907.html

Aye. Enhanced, yes, but, sometimes oversaturated photos have real use - this one, for example, does a great job at showing texture and chemical changes in the moon at different areas. That, in itself, has real use in astronomy, it's not just a pretty picture (though, it *is* pretty) |

The DI forum has been nothing but professional IMO. The occasional Nikon vs. Canon jabbing is humorous, but not too over the top.

I frequent that forum and I don't think I'm a camera snob. I certainly don't own a top of the line SLR. Or any type of SLR. For my uses, a middle of the line point and shoot camera (albeit one with many different options) works nice for me. |

Noel has really high end equipment and is good at post processing. I would expect nothing less from him.
I took this picture with an el-cheepo 1.2 megapixel HP Photosmart 215 point and shoot camera hand held up to the eyepeice of a small telescope. |

If you're basing your opinion on this thread - »Just a few shots from the backyard - that all DI Forum members are "camera snobs", I think that's a pretty broad brush stroke to paint all of us as snobs. DI Forum members have as many helpful and friendly folks as any other forum. I'll be the first to admit that there are probably a few that come across as arrogant, but again, no more than any other forum. But hey, that's your opinion and as you stated in another thread of yours, opinions are like ***holes, everyone has one. Since we're expressing our opinions, my opinion is that you got your feelings hurt and you're lashing out like a five-year-old. Time to grow up, don't you think? |

| reply to danza First, congrats to NoelC for making the front page. I came upon it the day he posted it here, and must say I was impressed. I'm not someone who uses anything other than a solid color for my desktop, but when I saw that shot, I gave it a try right away, and it will probably stay there for quite some time.
As to what other people have said about the DI forum itself, I won't claim to either frequent it or really know very much about the subject. However other than one or two slightly heated disagreements (which happens in every forum), I've been pretty impressed by it. Does it tend to lean towards the "DSLR Mafia" so to speak? Sure, why wouldn't it? Most anybody that gets real enjoyment from photography, or any other type of hobby, wants to get the best equipment they can. And that means DSLR in this case. I've also never seen a negative comment towards anyone using a point and shoot camera just for using one. If you've ever seen some of the photos from the regulars there, they do have some sort or right if they feel "better" than some others (not that I've ever really seen anything of the sort), because they are! And I've seen them patiently give advice to people asking for help who were very obviously very new to photography, so I don't know where this apparent snob metality comes from. |
