| was she senile when she purchased the service? If she was senile or unable to make rash decissions since 1985, I sure hope someone stopped her from voting all of those years. We can't have someone that can't make good decissions voting. It is funny that we want some coporation to look out for her "best" interest because she is unable to do that for herself, but you all would have a fit if we wanted to keep her from voting for the same reason. Either her decissions are her own or they are not... You can't have it both ways. | |

No, apparently, we don't. We want corporations to do whatever they like, whenever they like. If she's completely out of her gord and not able to understand that she's being screwed by your employer, fuck her. Right?

If she's completely out of her gord and not able to understand that she's being screwed by your employer, fuck her. Right? Would you agree then that she should not be allowed to vote? As the previous poster said, she either is responsible for her choices or she isn't. Which one is it?
I dare you to answer this question. Actually, I double-dare you. Remember though: Either she is, or she isn't.

That's known in debate parlance as a false dilemma. My position is not to ban the elderly from voting, it's to prevent incumbent phone providers from overcharging the elderly for antique hardware.

If she's completely out of her gord and not able to understand that she's being screwed by your employer, fuck her. Right? So, there are 750,000 people renting phones in the USA. How do you determine which ones are being 'screwed' and which ones actually want to rent their phones? I mean, you want Verizon to make that decision for people? "Well, Martha here is 82, so clearly we're taking advantage of her. Lets stop charging her. Charlie over there is 62, so he must like renting it for the peace of mind. Let's keep charging him."
I guarantee you that if the phone company decided to just 'give' the phone to these people, and something went wrong with the phone, and the phone company declined to help out because the phone was no longer their property, there'd be a story on that too.
I work for Bell Canada (in no way associated with any of the US Bells), and we see relatively young farmers who sheepishly bring in the rental phone they've had in the barn for 30 years and haven't actually used in 20. I'm supposed to feel sorry for these guys who were just too lazy to take care of it? All they had to do was bring the phone in, no fuss no muss, and in less than a minute, the rental charge is off thier bill. -- Click this and read. -> »www.actsofgord.com/ »Canadian Wireless FAQ I'm laying pipe, all night long, laying pipe, to satisfy that woman. - David Wilcox

LazManPremium join:2003-03-26 canada | 14 grand? Not on your life... Keep in mind, that she has NOT been paying $30/mth for the life of the rental. I'm guessing that is probably started at the $3-4/mth range, and increased over time in a series of inflation-related steps; so the $14,000 number is totally bogus.
Also, as has been pointed out, the subscriber had the oppertunity cancel at any time in the last 20 years... That she didn't cancel shows she was happy with the phone she had, and the service she was receiving. Before her relatives got involved; did she feel ripped off?
The phone company can't win - if they'd automatically removed her phone, and cancelled the lease; they'd have robbed an older woman of the phone she liked; and was familiar with... If they let the lease continue, which they did, well, people wouldn't like that, either...

But then, we all know Ma Bell is not respectable and never has been.

And this is the simple solution that would have taken away the sleaze factor. But, as we all know, they love to gouge.....

We also expect them back if you want it removed from your bill. You are able to purchase them outright now though. | I Remember Back in 1984... I remember back in 1984 when the AT&T breakup happened. I went to the AT&T PhoneCenter Store (remember those?) with my rented phones turn them in so that I could use my newly purchased replacement phones instead. There was a huge line of people turning in their phones as well and all the phones were being dumped into large bins. In some ways I kind of regret getting rid of those phones. They were Western Electric Trimline phones and were built rock solid. Not like the crap they sell now. I still have two of the Trimline's I bought as replacements and they still work flawlessly. -- I support the right to keep and arm bears.
| | | | Re: I Remember Back in 1984... I have a Western Electric 2500 touch tone I bought at a thrift store for $3 with a sticker that says: Property of Michigan Bell. Not for sale" on it. It works fins, as does the princess rotary I have also and they are both in good cosmetic shape.
I remember a commercial they ran here where they showed a house that had burned and was still smoldering. They zeroed on what had obviously been a 2500 desk phone that had been slagged by the heat and you could hear it ringing with that brass dual bell sound.
That was what was so nice about the old phones: the dual brass bell with the volume control, especially on the princess phones. Otherwise, they were old tech with Carbon microphones.
By the way, if you have one with a weak microphone, or, people tell you you are weak/distorted, just whack the mocrophone end of the handset on the table a couple of times. This loosens up the carbon granules and usually restores proper operation.
I keep the 2500 hooked up as a backup to use in a power failure, since all the other phones are 2.4 Ghz spread spectrum.

"Until two months ago, Strogen was still paying AT&T to use the phones $29.10 every three months, the phone company says. Strogen's granddaughters, Melissa Howell and Barb Gordon, ended the arrangement when they discovered the bills."

So why is it reported differently elsewhere?

I remember we rented our phones right up until 1990, two rotaries, one in my parents bedroom and a wall mounted one in the kitchen. You could really hear them ring, and they were rugged as could be!
