FON sucks

They never update there maps. And most linus. Are not even active. I wonder why.. Maybe the people just bought the routers for the sake of getting a cheap router.

More overseas consumer networking products, sigh

I am not pro-American in any way, but based on my experienced with numerous consumer/household router vendors (D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, SMC, and 3Com), I am very much against any Taiwanese company maintaining the firmware my router uses. The code is awful, bugs are everywhere, there's obviously no QA/testing done, and there's absolutely zero responsibility required for maintaining the product.

I often wonder how non-English-speaking/reading cultures can comprehend RFCs or technical specifications such as IP and TCP. (As someone who's white and took 5 years of Mandarin, I feel I'm quite justified in stating something this bold)

An idea whose time will never come

This is an idea that just will never fly. Given the state of the internet with all the hackers(organized crime types and just plain losers) out there, opening up your system just doesn't make sense for most people. Sure if you want to set up firewalled systems and are willing to front the time and cost of making a truly secure system available in some theory of social good, then go to it. But most users just don't need the grief and chance of increased exposure. Secondly, like the article points out, most people who signed on aren't in locations where anyone wants to make use of the open access anyway. More and more, it just sounds like some money making scam set up by the Spanish developers.

Well the firmware will be maintained by fon people, as far as hardware those us made routers almost all use chips made in taiwan or other asia country. The firmware is written by the people from linksysinfo and dd-wrt projects, so it's waay better then anything stock

God knows that being patriotic is a capital offense if you're an American these days-- although most countries don't have the conviction to execute criminals so they'll probably just send you to la Côte d'Ivoire and let the French deal with you.

Unless they can provide some kind of centralised logging of users and IP use, this can be a security issue. Regardless of the fact that I am very passionate about on-line privacy, I would just feel much more comfortable if FON was keeping logs simply because I know my ISP is keeping logs on my account and would hate to be accused of anything I had no involvement with.

That's what I did. I got the Linksys in the mail, registered it, and prompltly reflashed it with DDWRT. The FON software sucks ass, the thing would drop it's connection every 5 minutes. I ordered another one with my dads business address, and sold it to some guy for $40.

Wont leaving your router open for Fon let your neighbors download what ever they want?
I would share my wireless but I'm afraid of someone getting me in trouble for downloading movies or songs.
