Such a big hard drive... 20MB....

Having that much space makes it worth the $600.

Can't you replace it with a WD 200GB drive? or no? Are they the standard IDE drives I'm a noob to this.... |

The price cut is only going to be IN japan, no where else according to MSNBC. Stupid move on Sony's part to not lower prices anywhere else.
Edit: CNN, but I am sure MSNBC has this as well. |

Knowing Sony, it could be a standard SATA drive (it's supposed to be hot-swappable so I assume it's SATA not IDE), just with a proprietary connector, maybe even a firmware/software protection scheme to keep people from buying HDDs off the shelf and putting them in their PS3s... -- "When they call the roll in the Senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer 'Present' or 'Not guilty.'" -- Theodore Roosevelt |

You guys have no idea what you're talking about.
The $600 version has the 60 gig HDD, the $500 version has the 20. Now that the 20 has HDMI, the only difference between the more expensive one and the cheaper one is the inclusion of Wifi, the larger HDD, and some memory card readers. Also the HDD is 2.5" SATA and you will be able to replace it just by popping in another 2.5" drive. They've already confirmed this. As far as Wifi and the mem cards, you can just buy adaptors at the store and upgrade the cheaper version at a later date.
Considering most of you obviously haven't heard much regarding the system and are basing your decision on price alone, I'd recommend you actually check out some of the games. Most of the vids coming out of TGS are by-far the most impressive I've seen on a video game ever. |

Sony's first and biggest market is Japan, so smart move by Sony. The Japanese gaming industry (console, game developers) make games for the Japanese market...no one else. The US market is a drop in the bucket. Sony doesn't have to lower prices for US gamers. |

It's HDMI v1.3. Which is a very very new standard. Very cool. |

The press release states several times that you can use USB mem readers or wifi adapters. So no you don't need "special" adapters.
What you do need a special adapter for is the older PS1/PS2 memory cards so you can use them if you choose.
Also the only color is "clear black". So all the silver images you've been seeing don't mean you can get a silver or black PS3...which honestly I think would have been cool if they had given us the choice. Oh well, its certainly an option down the road. |

| reply to pb5k That's what they did with the official PS2 Hard Drive. Basically, it used a very specific firmware which would allow it to be able to show up in the ps2's file browser and let you save data to/from it.

Except Sony is only releasing 100k PS3 units in Japan, compared to the 400k they are releasing here at launch.
Can you say "deliberate famine"? I knew you could.
Sony did the same shit with the PS2 and its memory cards on purpose.

No, but I do know the first TWO revisions of the playstation had overheating issues...the first version of the PS2 had overheating issues. Sony installed rootkits on users of their AUDIO CDs. Sony also made millions of defective batteries for laptops. They expect me to pay $500-$600 for a gaming console they are crazy, especially with their faulty manufacturing practices. |
