Great deal

Hmm, I don't know a whole lot about AT&Ts reliability, but this should give Verizon a real run for their money(DSL wise, not FiOS).

It's just a shame it's not available here....

Re: Great deal

This doesn't matter at all to Verizon. People who have Verizon DSL won't be able to get AT&T DSL, and vice versa.

Re: Great deal

I second that

and also it is good that the yearly contracts are gone. I like my cox dsl but the contracts kept me away(well and their slow speed but that is besides the issue)

Re: Great deal

I am not sure I agree with you. Without a contract they will be able to instantly adjust your price to fit their mood. And I would be willing to bet this is the ONLY reason they are getting rid of it. Even when there were contracts you could get their service on a month to month basis. Sure it cost you a little bit more, but thats what you get when you dont want to gaurantee business to them.

Re: Great deal

Well, their site currently lists a one year contact as having the exact same price as month to month. For those who feel safer that they are locked in for a year, they have the option.

according to this page:

might be different type of att dsl tho.

Does this mean my contract is null and void now? If I call and re-rate?

I've been off contract since June. However, I see I'm paying Elite prices ($34.99/mo) but I only have the Pro package. I'm assuming some adjustment is coming my way in the near future.

The price for the Pro package listed here seems fair. I've been with SBC/ATT for years now.

Same here. I like Adelphia's speeds, especially upload, but I'm too busy anymore to make use of it... so I'd rather have $20 1.5mbit DSL, but no availability here either. It's funny because my uncle, who lives 5 houses down the street, has AT&T DSL and his house is part of the same track as mine. Also, when I've called AT&T in the past to check availability, the person on the otherside alwys acts surprised that my line doesn't qualify.

Oh well. Maybe Time Warner is offering their "Lite" (?) package here already.

Adelphia always had a lite tier available. Simply had to call and ask, I believe the speeds were 256/256.

So when Bellsouth switches to AT&T, do we get the new rates?

Re: Bellsouth

I am looking forward to it somewhat because I already know that scheduled upgrades (that are currently on hold due to the merger) will finally put a RT between me and the CO, hopefully boosting my neighborhood up to at least 3.0, maybe even 6.0 if we are lucky.

What about the people that are on a contract like me. I am paying 27.99 a month for the Elite I don't want to lose that price that I signed up last month

Re: Bellsouth

I assume that contracts hold until term. For Bellsouth Fastaccess users not on contract, this will be a great price break.

if you signed up last month then you are still on for the 12 months at 27.99.

Impressive (and fair) pricing, but...

1) Doesn't state upstream rates (6mbit/128kbit! What a deal!! Uhh...)

2) Hw does this help those of us who are 12,000+ feet from the CO due to Crazy-Go-Lucky City Wiring extravaganzas?

I'd rather pay more a month knowing they'll have an RT available/near my abode guaranteed within 6 months. Most folks here in northern California are stuck with two providers: Comcast or AT&T/SBC. There are a couple wireless providers (wireless = unreliable = no thanks), and I'm intentionally excluding companies like Speakeasy and DSLExtreme (since both rely on AT&T/SBC copper, and all telco support/service issues have to go through them regardless -- why pay for the extra tier which does nothing but add extra delays?)

NorCal is definitely not the place to be for broadband, that's for sure.

Re: Impressive (and fair) pricing, but...

The 6mb elite package actually comes with 384kb to 608kb upstream.

The Pro package is 384 to 512 and the Express is 128 to 384.

sorta happy about this

I'm a college guy who lives in an apartment and is going to be graduating at the of the year. I don't want to be stuck with a yearly contract for an internet connection I don't need anymore.

Another nail in the coffin of small isps

That's well below the wholesale pricing from BellSouth to NSPs. This is what FCC ruling on DSL line sharing brings.

This is a serious blow to any ISP who has bought wholesale access from any AT&T/BellSouth/SBC company. How is an ISP supposed to compete with a $24.99 price when they are charged $34.50ish for a raw 3.0Mbps circuit before adding in Support/Email/Bandwidth?

This is a lets see who can survive with deep pockets. Well when you get your pockets filled with the USF it isn't hard to wait out your competition.

Just remember when your bitching about duopoly. Who creates them? The cowsumer who flocks blindly to cheep prices. This will end up being Coke vs. Pepsi. Coke and Pepsi run little specials now and then but they keep their pricing equal. Do you really think in the last few years the costs of producing either coke or Pepsi have really gone up %50? No. It's a slow cat and mouse game that makes both sides more and more money.

I still pay 99 cents for a 2-litre of Coke, just like I did fifteen years ago. Don't know what you're on about.

That would actually be a good marketing strategy: offer their Elite tier for $13.37 for...hmm...the first 3 months.

AT&T - Was SBC

Got my AT&T bill today and it was jacked up. One phone call fixed it though with an immediate credit...some kind of snafu with the billing change from SBC DSL to ATT DSL.
I renewed my PRO with no contract for $24.99. Could have had Elite for $5 more = $29.99. Has always been reliable. Have had it nearly two years and have only been down twice and was back up within a couple of hours of reporting the problem.

Basic economics will show us why they are doing this...

DSL whether you believe it or not is quite INELASTIC.

Hence they will actually make more profit even if they loose a few customers.

I don't like price hikes but certainly this understood from a business point of view. From a consumer the lack of competition will always keep prices high. Again basic economics... when there are poor substitutes the product tends to be inelastic compared to elastic.

I love having 1 choice at my mom's place and 2 choices at the other place while some places like New York have 3-5 choices.

Dry DSL owns you by the way... it is MORE EXPENSIVE than non dry DSL. WTF kind of deals are those....

Gosh darn it!

I'd love to go on a cartman inspired rant about now but I don't speak that way, especially as a guest in someone's house.

Anyway I'd love for this to be true but it means diddly squat to me. I'd like to go for the pro pakcage, and hell for less than 35 (before taxes/fees) elite seem just perfect. However... I can't get anything more than Express (any ATT techs want to prove me wrong and upgrade me :P) and then after that I still have the retiree's concession on the phone so I can get anything but the concession price which is more than 19.99 last time I checked.

ARGH!

Oh yeah, if this is real great pricing scheeme, wonder what if anything comcast will do except run more monk advertising.

Nice pricing...

But it's a shame there are no more one year contracts.
