1.5Mbps??

Im guessing this service is appealing to those without cable or dsl avail in their area.

what a cash cow for BS. plus, we're bringing back 384 service?? why is the U.S. broadband market going backwards instead of forwards?

This is Wimax. Therefore we are going forward as they are bringing a 3rd choice of broadband in some areas, and the ONLY choice for broadband in other areas.

They'd have to look at the coverage map to determine if they qualify for the service.

More competition is going forward, not backwards.

Re: cow

for those areas where this is the ONLY option, then yes, this is moving forward. otherwise there are still only 2 options, right? dsl or wimax through bs or cable. not to mention that bs is not going to compete seriously against itself, as you can see by the 384 speed and 29.99 price tag.

Regardless on how you look at it, an additional broadband option is moving FORWARD. The fact now that some areas may have now 4 different options for broadband (cable, dsl, wimax, sat) is moving forward.

Other areas that will begin to see Wimax will have much higher speeds (assuming they already have DSL or cable). Areas that only have dial up or satellite internet will see these type of speeds at first. The way the operators are looking at it is that people will be glad to have any kind of broadband (other than sat) so even 384k is welcome. The other thing is that they can offer 384k, keep customers happy, AND make some decent $$. This is the real driving factor for BS in this case.

after the merger

they'll turn it off. And they won't build most of it in the first place.

no point for citys, good for rural areas.

It's no good for this service to be deployed in city areas where broadband access is already abundant, but if those signals can reach rural areas where broadband is scarce, then I see this as a great opportunity for Bellsouth.

Name the competing services of this product and the provider of those services.

On a side note, I'd really like to have a law forcing anyone that claims satellite is "broadband" to spend two years using it.
