It is obvious that this isn't just some random attack by merely playful or by criminal hackers. It is a coordinated attack by the Government of China on the US. Besides taking steps to protect our systems and information, the US should open up a massive attack on Chinese systems in a mutually assured destruction tactic to have these attacks cut off at the source - the Chinese government.

Nothing on the net is ever safe, I don't care what measures are taken.
Secure internal networks only if needed, nothing hooked to the world net, standalone machines for world net access.

There are tons of proxies in China and it could be some other government using that proxy to penetrate these computers. How the hell you know it's China for sure. A investigation has to be launched ASAP on what exactly is going on and if the true destinations are that exactly of China.
I used to use Proxies from China all the time just to bypass the school filter and where highly anonymous and contained a boatload of banwidth. So I won't be so quick to point fingers and say China.
P.S Sometimes other countries do this delibrately to start war's against powerful nations when we are fighting the wrong enemy. |

All kidding aside, some government economist will point to this attack as proof that we have to give China even better trading deals so they can sell us even more cheaply made crap.
One thing I don't understand... why the hell do we buy anything from China? That's one country we should have embargoed since 1949. There human rights record alone should be reason enough to slam the door in their face.

Are individual workstations topologically available to such attacks? The only things that should be "hackable" are systems (placed on the DMZ) that have providing public information as their specific role in life.

because they pay their employees 75 cents an hour to build the Ford or GM car you drive and here the same dude gets paid 35 dollars an hour. it's capitalism. I would worry more about them financing the National Debt. they have no conscience about anything and one day they're going to say "pay up now" and the United States effectively becomes their servant. they fully understand this. |

If this is indeed linked to the Chinese govt. We might want to think twice about purchasing PCs from the Chinese. It seems trivial for them to hide a few things in the OS for use in the future! No telling where those Lenovos will end up!! |

also, i think we won't let them do that. what we WILL do, is what some posters have already alluded to: demonize them and then go to war. we will say it's because they are spying on us or something else unreleated. then, we won't have to pay back our new lords and masters. of course, there are tons of holes in this prediction. the biggest = collapse of global banking system. |

We buy from china precisely because our workers want $35 an hour to do the same thing. This is why china is growing as it is. We cannot compete as long as we want so much for an hours work. And, leave us face it: $35 an hour is rediculous.
The workers and unions in this country are simply going to have to realize that their jobs will continue to migrate to china and the third world as long as they are in a non competitive position on wages.
Unions, are you paying attention? This is why they want to and will, eventually, bust you. You MUST adapt or die. The gravy train is most definately over.
While I understand that this means biting the bullet, it MUST BE DONE. There are untold millions in the "third world" who will work harder for a dollar, bottom line.
However, eventually, workers in all countries will have reached the living standard we enjoy. Then what, corporations? You will no longer have a cheap source of labor to outsource to and unions of one type or another in these "third world" countries you ran to, along with draconian regulations, since many of these governments wont mess areound with you. It is your single greatest weakness:

Like this would ever happen, or, be allowed to happen. The same kind of things were being said in the 80's with Japan. You notice that didn't happen either. In such a case, the US would simply repudiate the debt.
What is China going to do? They NEED our market. Selling to us is what is fueling their economy and ENRICHING THEIR CITIZENS, who have decided they LIKE our system and our goodies.
Besides, the PROJECTED defict is SHRINKING.
No. China doesn't know it yet, really, in the central government, but they have embarked on capitalism and their citizens like it. There is no turning back. They had no other choice, really, if they were going to become a player in the world market, and avoid revolution by their citizens which they could not possibly stop or win, they had to integrate themselves into it.

Ummm...U S currency is the de facto international currency used for international transactions. Since they are not likely to become our "masters" any time soon, it is unlikely that we would go to war with them after demonizing them. While they have a large military, they are unable to project that military power anywhere as well as we can.
No. Such a scenario is extremely unlikely. China is, essentially, in the same position we were in the 1900's industrially. That's why their products are cheap. However, just like the Japanese, they will get better. But then, they will have to compete against more established economies, such as ours, japan, korea, the EU (such as they are), etc.
Nor is it likely the global banking system will collapse since that is in no ones interests and would not be allowed to happen. You all seem to think the rules of finance that apply to you and I also apply to soveregn governments and global corporations. You should know better. |
