What's the point of appointing a former telco lobbyist?

If they can't vote on part of the FCC's agenda.

Not sure how he will be for consumers, but he was a lobbyist for CLECs, which at least says he has been against the ILECs some (most?) of the time.

These think tank and telecom lawyers think and fight for what they're paid to think and fight for. I think his personal political beliefs mirror our resident deregulatory zealots....and Martin's.

Recusals won't last long. In a year he will be voting on all FCC issues.

That in itself is a red flag. Not that many of the FCCs policies do not raise a red flag today.

aww man

And I was so looking forward to AT&T being my phone/internet provider as soon as possible. NOT! I'm thinking that AT&T is stalking me, every phone company I've used has been taken over by AT&T. Oh well. What is one to do?

What I can't understand is why Kevin Martin wants the merger to be approved without conditions. Is there a logical reason that he has stated that I haven't seen or something? I guess its one of those things the general public isn't supposed to understand.

Ugh, I'll pass. I like Durham and all but wouldn't want to deal with Verizon unless they upgrade to Fios then I would move in a heartbeat!

Re: lol

I have a solution to that problem. Its not viable or well, sane, but I think it will work. The government creates a public company and gives every legally registered voter one share of the company. Only voters that do not hold a position in the FCC, telecom industries or other related departments and industries can own one share in this company. The purpose of the company is to provide telephone, cable, all forms of internet access, cell phone and all other forms of telecommunications services to the people that hold the above mentioned offices or positions. So every time a company raises the cable rates, we vote to raise theirs two fold, every time a provider limits a service marketed as unlimited, we vote to increase their limit two fold. Every time the FCC considers allowing two monopolies to create one huge monopoly, over and over again, we vote to degrade their service but charge twice as much for it. Like I said, not a sane or viable idea, but it is nice to dream. (I'm kidding in case you couldn't tell)

Don't get me wrong I think businesses should do as they please (most do anyways), but look at what AT&T did before it was broken up. Imagine what the telecom industry would look like right now if AT&T was never forced to break up.

edit: Added the I'm kidding part...

The report says the Justice Department hasn't ruled on the merger as yet. So, why was the FCC voting in the first place with clearence from the DOJ?

Yes, it's a big secret I'm pro-consumer and a humanist who writes for a pro-consumer website that focuses on the user perspective. The bias police win another victory!

Which part of what I said isn't accurate?

Re: lol

What? It is a joke, as in not being serious (edited previous post to reflect this). And since when in a communist state do they allow the people to own anything of real value?

and to go OT, btw in the US I'm told who I can and can't marry, I'm told which utility companies I can get services from, any level of government has the power to take my house away (if I owned one), I can be thrown in jail for an undetermined amount of time without a warrant, my calls, internet and email can be monitored at any time, the list goes on. Some of this may or may not be legal but it is still being done to American citizens. Hmmmm.....this is starting to look similar to something else. And no I'm not an extremist, I just watch and listen to what is going on.

He's never pretended to be. The people who run this site have their point of view and do not apologise for it. As long as they are open about it then no problem.
