The threatened RIAA lawsuits did have an effect on the YouTube purchase by Google. I knew Google wouldn't have purchased YouTube with a ton of litigation hanging over the deal. This was the "other shoe" dropping that was implicit in the deal. Google is now a corporate behemoth with stockholders to answer to and they can't afford to coddle copyright infringers.
And things like this helped drive their decision to cooperate: »www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx···le=35026

My point is that the **AAs are finally going to have to deal with a substantially big company and the outcome will likely be more fair and balanced than previous challenges. |

Or, putting a rosier non-BBR-like spin on things, it could be the opportunity for Google to be the company that thinks outside the norm to forge some innovative deals with the media companies.
It doesn't always have to be "well if a site can't host illegal content then it's crap." I think Google has the influence and the imagination to do something that both sides can like.

Google should intend in eliminating competitors, not tie themselves in bad PR.
YouTube became popular for what it was; a place to upload random content and to a certain extent distribute pirated copyrighted content.
YouTube will become another AOL portal very soon. Shamefully, Google took it in at a very high price. |

| And the cycle continues
If YouTube will undergo a content scrubbing, people will just flock to other smaller websites where they can post their content without as much fear. People will just continue to migrate underground. It's like with P2P...from Napster to Kazaa to BT and LimeWire. -- Please use all available doors...you have 33 to choose from. |

| If Google's smart
it can counter this legally by taking best measure to ensure that copywritten information is not submitted. It does this by screening uploaded content AND offering its own set of content (at no charge, ad supported) that has been approved by the original artists. Other measures to ensure that their content can't be downloaded without paying for it would also counter the legality issues.
Now obviously smart users know how to get videos from YouTube. Flash isn't the best choice to use. But there are other ways to prohibit downloading. There are some sites where I could grab the audio but no video, even though the video played fine when streamed. There were some sites where no matter what tool I used or what process I did, I just could not grab the stream.
Google just has to play it smart, and YouTube can still be as popular as it is now. |

Of course Mark Cuban was right. Anyone with half a brain could see it coming. Why sue a company like youtube that has no money or profit. They didn't have anything to sue for except maybe taking the site down. Now that Google has them, it is a prime target thats for sure. Time will tell how Google will change youtube, but from this article, you can see they are preparing for removing copyrighted works from the site. -- My Domain Nightfall's Hockey and Life Journal |

From Wikipedia - "In 1995, Audionet was conceived with the idea of broadcasting live games and events through the Internet. With a single server and ISDN line,[22] Audionet became Broadcast.com in 1998. By 1999, Broadcast.com had grown to 330 employees and annual revenues close to $100 million.[23] With the stock market in the midst of the Dot-com boom, Broadcast.com was acquired by Yahoo!, and Cuban received about $5.04 billion in Yahoo! stock." -- What's certain about Darwinism is that it would take less time for (1) a single-celled organism to evolve into a human being through mutation and natural selection than for (2) Darwinists to admit they have no proof of (1) - Ann Coulter |
