Doesn't seem to makes sense to me... You can see information about other countries and realize that yours sucks at 128 kbps, or 16 KB/s. I guess I don't understand the thinking behind this.

I wonder where they get access from for their broadband to the reset of the world? Are there just a few choke points? Could the government take them over and slow packets down? There is satellite but I doubt they really have access to that. |

On one level it's about morality, according to the norms in Iran. Narrowband-only makes it a little harder for Western culture to influence the population (fewer images with the text, less music and movies). They've started enforcing the longstanding ban on satellite dishes too, which used to be very lax.
But it's really about maintaining the power of the clerics who control the government. There's a system of religious councils or something similar, parallel to the formal government, which more or less dictates domestic policy. But the younger generation want more freedom, in male/female relations and other areas. There was a trend to liberalization before the US started threatening Iran. Now it's going more conservative again.
The internet might become more valuable for communications if the US attacks. |

This will be a real test of the Iranian government's domestic view. On one hand, the government cannot avoid a scandal if they do act (which would keep them from acting, one would think). Conversely, if they do not act, they will have a very difficult time monitoring traffic and limiting the spread of Internet video pornography (bring them the revolution).
I find it somewhat amusing (and refreshing) that the thing that could potentially bring down theocracies is online porno. |

I agree with your points of view. Even their El Presidente doesn't utter a syllable that isn't preapproved by their Mullas.
You want to see what the internet will do to their country, just look at China. If I were trying to bring down a massive dam, a crack would do, if I'm patient.

The clerics dont care about scandals. They have the power, bottom line, unless the people rise against them. The Iranian people have a robust black market for tech goods like satellite gear and shortwave radio and. have had it for years now. They are not stupid, nor are they gulled by their government.
All the ones I have spoken with and known have been well educated people trying to get ahead and feed their families, just like everyone else.
Sooner or later, the Mullahs will be overthrown. It's inevitable. The Iranian people hate them with a passion which usually leads to revolution. They rue the day they overthrew the Shah and have for a long time. |

I can only hope some of our country's ISPs will defy our government should they make retarded laws similar to the one in Iran. Of course, a stupid law I could see in the US would be one that outlaws encryption such as TOR or outlaws the use of proxies. All in the name of stopping pervs and terrorists. |
