Comments on news posted 2006-10-30 18:34:29: We recently noted that Iranian leaders have decided to ban anything faster than 128kbps in their country, in order to prevent the "undermining [of] Islamic culture among the younger generation." However Iranian ISPs are defying the order. ..

Re: Seperate from the rest of the world!

Doesn't seem to makes sense to me... You can see information about other countries and realize that yours sucks at 128 kbps, or 16 KB/s. I guess I don't understand the thinking behind this.

Shoot, some of us in the US still don't have that fast of an option =)

Re: Seperate from the rest of the world!

On one level it's about morality, according to the norms in Iran. Narrowband-only makes it a little harder for Western culture to influence the population (fewer images with the text, less music and movies). They've started enforcing the longstanding ban on satellite dishes too, which used to be very lax.

But it's really about maintaining the power of the clerics who control the government. There's a system of religious councils or something similar, parallel to the formal government, which more or less dictates domestic policy. But the younger generation want more freedom, in male/female relations and other areas. There was a trend to liberalization before the US started threatening Iran. Now it's going more conservative again.

The internet might become more valuable for communications if the US attacks.

Re: Seperate from the rest of the world!

I agree with your points of view. Even their El Presidente doesn't utter a syllable that isn't preapproved by their Mullas.

You want to see what the internet will do to their country, just look at China. If I were trying to bring down a massive dam, a crack would do, if I'm patient.

Over here we take the internet so for granted. Over there, the internet is the voice of democracy. And that voice is a megaphone. Its the proverbial 800 lb gorilla in the room.

I figured it out before modems, when Jimmy Carter was in office. I was so excited to see him elected, then WHAM! sucker punch to the gut.

Arash Naderpour stoned to death ..........

.........
"They cannot force us to stop it, they cannot check each one of the ports in the country," says Arash Naderpour, the CEO of Iranian ISP CTEL Kish. Naderpour states he believes the government's position may have more to do with capacity than politics.
If Arash Naderpour isn't real careful about speaking out, he may never be heard from again. The clerical leadership in Iran are not known for their grudging acceptance of those who fight them.

I wonder where they get access from for their broadband to the reset of the world? Are there just a few choke points? Could the government take them over and slow packets down? There is satellite but I doubt they really have access to that.

What, does he think that he lives in AMERICA or something?? I bet people like him laugh (their "heads off") when they hear about how the government "oppresses" us over here. Its almost good that places like Iran still exist, so that whenever the socialist pinkos on this site whine about lack of freedoms we can simply point to Iran and tell them to shut up.

Terrible way to look at things.

If someone shoots both of some guys arms off and then just takes off one of your arms. You shouldn't complain because you still have your other arm. No?

Ummm, actually YES you would NOT complain. IF, a situation like that did occur you would probably be ecstatic that you weren't killed, never-mind that you lost an arm. And you thought my analogy was terrible????

Re: Arash Naderpour stoned to death ..........

Bah, another sellout to the establishment. The fact that your ARM was taken is the problem. It's like your right to privacy, and your precious civil liberties which have been trampled on by the bush regime. The fact that you lost only 'one' arm doesn't make the fact that you lost AN arm any less horrifying. It's when the neo-con right wing whacko republicans keep trampling on your civil rights that the problem exists. The correct solution to the problem is to not stand for ANY encroachment on your rights. The right to speak freely, the right to bear arms, the right to be secure in your homes. All of those rights are being sold out to the megacorps and the fascist republican scum currently in control. I for one, will celebrate on November 8th, when the republican party is trounced once and for all, and we can get our civil liberties BACK from the nazi bush third reich.

the test

This will be a real test of the Iranian government's domestic view. On one hand, the government cannot avoid a scandal if they do act (which would keep them from acting, one would think). Conversely, if they do not act, they will have a very difficult time monitoring traffic and limiting the spread of Internet video pornography (bring them the revolution).

I find it somewhat amusing (and refreshing) that the thing that could potentially bring down theocracies is online porno.

Re: the test

The clerics dont care about scandals. They have the power, bottom line, unless the people rise against them. The Iranian people have a robust black market for tech goods like satellite gear and shortwave radio and. have had it for years now. They are not stupid, nor are they gulled by their government.

All the ones I have spoken with and known have been well educated people trying to get ahead and feed their families, just like everyone else.

Sooner or later, the Mullahs will be overthrown. It's inevitable. The Iranian people hate them with a passion which usually leads to revolution. They rue the day they overthrew the Shah and have for a long time.

Re: the test

Speaking to an Iranian he informs a big reason for the Mullahs still being in power is a certain country's leader labelling Iran as part of the 'Axis of Evil'.

When someone threatens your country it tends to bring people together, not to defend their government, but their country even if they hate the people who run it.

i wonder

when karlmarx is to tell us that the 'bush regime's' right-wing, fundamentalist christian, nazi militant, anti-abortion, theo-con, neo-con policies have unduly influenced the the holy iranians to institute 128k broadband on all of their citizens, so they don't receive the daily indoctrination of the 'bush regime's' right-wing, fundamentalist christian, nazi militant, anti-abortion, theo-con, neo-con puppet policies.

Brave

I can only hope some of our country's ISPs will defy our government should they make retarded laws similar to the one in Iran. Of course, a stupid law I could see in the US would be one that outlaws encryption such as TOR or outlaws the use of proxies. All in the name of stopping pervs and terrorists.

Re: umm...

I tip my hat to the courage of the Iranian ISPs who have resolved their doubts in favor of internet access to the people. I think the Government's clamp down on access to foreign information sources might have something to do with the growing unpopularity of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Iran has a major election coming up. President Ahmadinejad is less certain of a victory than before. Many Iranians are upset with his actions. I suspect that the ban on high speed internet is meant to stop people from listening to and watching foreign feeds. Remember that they have just cracked down on Satelite TV.

Attached is a recent analysis of the situation published in the Gulf News, a Dubai based paper. Dubai is geographically very close to Iran and keeps a careful eye on what is going on there.

What is particularly unnerving is their predictions that Iran will attempt to foment further tensions in the region by: (a) reigniting the Israeli/Lebanese war; (b) pumping more weapons into Iran or Afghanistan; and/or, (c) staging a coup in Lebanon to put it under Hezballah control. As to the last comment, I would also note that the same paper reported massive weapon smuggling from Syria to Hezballah controlled factions in Lebanon.*

There is nothing more dangerous than a cornered animal and I think this animal might be feeling a little cornered. I suspect that the Gulf News is correct that the current leadership of Iran will attept to divert the public attention from their failures and they are trying to limit the access to foreign media sources which will call them out for this.

Just my two pence.

Re: umm...

seriously? who gives a fuck?
they're doing it to hide BS from the states..and its US's fault cose they're the ones who want a war with iran not the other way around..
US only see's 1 thing...OIL
lets see...they got iraq...afganistan..basically they own Ecuador's oil..US wanted to make up shit with Venezuela too
why only OIL countries...makes one wonder :P
why doesn't the US go invade north-korea..since the north-koreans even made fun of them...basically the translation goes +- like this "if u mother fuckers come here...we'll drop a bomb on you"...the US can build 300 nuclear plants...nobody will tell them shit...so why should they shit on someone's progression...lets see also...after the 2nd world war... Poland bought LOTS & LOTS of nuclear bombs just in case the same thing happened again...i wonder where they're stacked did the poles put them in a garbage bag and throw them out?
its all about the $$
iran doesnt want a war...iran wants $$
nuclear = more $$ with less costs...and if they can build a few bombs a year and sell it to the russians who sells it to the koreans or the chinese = more $$
eventually they'll stop making bombs cose there wont be any buyers cose there's no wars but the US made up ones...

IRAQ "oh he's a bad president we gotta overthrow him put him in a court and kill him"

afganistan "oh they got bad ppl..we gotta go there and school them up...put one of our guys as president and keep getting $$ from there"

Venezuela "oh he's a bad president we gotta overthrow him..oops maybe not or we'll have to make war with a lot of 'hermanos' and we'll probably lose cose they're too many even in our country"

a lot of $$ made in afganistan was from farms to make heroine/coke..the US went there and destroyed everything...
why doesnt the US go to Holland/The Netherlands whatever u wanna call it...its legal there
u can probably go there...get outside the airport to the Red District or whatever they call it...get inside a shop..."can i get a beer, some coke and a bitch to suck my dick?" thank you!
thats what i call freedom...(its probably start being more expensive tough since the germans want to tax their 'job' )
poor girls...now for each guy they do..they gotta pay 19% IVA to the government plus their pimp? damnnnnnnn that comes out expensive..i wonder who charges more..the government or the pimp? hahaha :]
