Is this free for customers?

Is this a free service for people...or do they have to pay a monthly fee?

If it's free...these complainers need to just shut up about it!!!

If they are paying for it...then I understand the complaints.

A free service that doesn't work right is worth what you pay for it - NOTHING. And last I looked complaining was an American birthright.

They should see credits on their next bill.

This is like my teacher complaining that the reconstituted water in my science project still tasted like urine.

I mean come on... it's a science project AND it's free so STFU.

It's all in the wording.
Maybe if the article stated "users giving feedback on the somewhat spotty coverage" it wouldn't read so bad.

I have spotty coverage....

The service is free. I am in contact with Google and they have said they will add a node closer to my house. It seems that the node that is 500+ feet away from me does not give constant and consistent connection.

Re: I have spotty coverage....

500ft is a stretch for a Tropos if you're indoor. Line of sight is better.

I maintain an eight Tropos network, very small comparing to Google or any other muni. Fortunately I don't own it, just paid for mtc. I can't see how the owner make money based on number of problems.

wifi sucks

Wifi was NEVER ment to be a MAN/WAN technology. Its too easily corrupted, and doesnt have enough bandwidth. It was created with the RF profile inside someone's house/room, not meaning to be strong enough to reach outside the building and enter into signal competition with other houses. Usually wifi nodes dont communicate with each other to make sure they dont interfere, plus think about all the other 2.4 ghz users. This isnt a cellular or wimax network, wifi shouldnt be used as one. The concept of relaying data from node to node to wired node is retarded for anything other than static web pages and email. Each node must have a wired connection, and preferably talk to each other on signal power and interference and handoffs, otherwise each node is only a range extender and no additional bandwidth is provided.

I hope to see these muni wifi nodes replaced with licensed spectrum or unlicensed but digital traffic-only spectrum base stations/nodes/etc.

ALL these "mesh" products arent standard off the shelf, either its custom PCBs, cases, or just labels. Why doesnt the govt allocate a unlicensed only to computer lan/tcpip/internet traffic, and make sure there is 1 standard and ALL the nodes even on diff networks/SSIDs communicate to make sure they dont conflict/radiation levels, channel reservation, etc.
