| Come on people......
With so many places that don't have basic food or clean water, how can some countries even be concerned with broadband?
Sounds like more idealistic talk with a UN that, more and more, becomes further disconnected from its intended mission. |

| UN is Worthless
This is an agency that can't feed the hungry, can't enrich the poor, can't disarm terrorist groups, rapes the vulnerable, takes bribes from dictators in trouble and puts oppressive states in charge of human rights.
Aside from lacking the legal authority to make such a proclamation, what moral authority does it have to make such a statement? -- Only SHATNER is Kirk. |

| Say what?
Can we live without electricity in our society? Not well at all. Can we live without running water in our society? Not well at all. Can we live without trash/waste disposal? Not well at all. Can we live without broadband? We can. We just have to rely on services like FED EX, USPS, UPS, dial-up, courier service, FAX, telephone etc, etc etc.
Broadband is a convenience. It makes things easier, attainment of data easier and just saves time.
Let the bashing begin! |

said by nasadude :you don't think broadband is important? No. And broadband is certainly not as important as feeding the hungry, helping the poor to not be poor, disarming terrorist groups, not raping the vulnerable, steering clear of bribes from corrupt governments, and protecting human rights. All of these things are what the UN is supposed to be doing. -- Only SHATNER is Kirk. |

Who cares what the UN thinks?
We've had this argument/discussion on these forums several times. Will broadband eventually become a utility? Probably. Should it be considered one now. No.

you a luddite or somthin'?
I agree the UN can and should be doing all those things you mention, but I hate to tell ya, broadband is the future whether you believe it or not.
that's why I think the U.S. will eventually suffer in the world community if we don't get our sheeit together about making real broadband available thruout the country. |

I cant agree more, the UN is like the ACLU of the international world. All either of them do is go around stirring up trouble, yet (THANKFULLY) neither of them has the far reaching powers they seek. The UN should be disbanded immediately. They are honestly a worthless bunch of idiots that cant get anything done. They send "peace keeping" soldiers into the most dangerous areas of the world and then prohibit them from engaging rapists, murderers, and terrorists who commit crimes right in front of them. If the UN decides to step up to the plate and actually create a military deterrence and do something for once, then I might consider revising my statement. Lets not forget the billions of dollars they waste "talking" about world issues and then doing nothing about them. -- я люблю медведей! |

| Did I miss somthing?
From what I read it said the broadband has become vital for business. Nowhere did I see it was a necessity for the average person (or average poor person as the case may be.)
Look at it from this perspective: If developing countries can't provide the necessary tools for businesses to survive (home-grown or foreign) how will these countries attract the kind of investment that helps to build the infrastructure to allow people to prosper and make poor people considerably less poor. Yes, I understand that without potable water or stable electricity, business cannot thrive and no one will invest. My point is that broadband is almost on par with those services to help build an economy. Broadband (if used properly) can also help expand educational options at a lower cost. Without such educational opportunities, no place can prosper. |

If you are standing in Ethiopia-FOOD would probably the most important thing to desire- If you are in Somalia-Some sort of security--Here in the USA BB COULD be thought of as something necessary to encourage growth of business and commerce-It's all relative. |

Their argument would be that the two are related. In order to be able to feed themselves and keep a roof over their heads people need to participate fully in the economy. The concern is not just with providing charity to feed and house people, but with creating the conditions that allow them to become self-sufficient. If you want people to be able to become self sufficient they have to have access to the tools of the modern economy and an increasingly important tool is communications access. Societies without the proper communications and transportation infrastructure generally remain societies that are perpetually economically backward and isolated.
Obviously this is complicated by the many other reasons that people may be economically isolated, including things like wars, perverse and corrupt governments etc., but I don't think the failure of the UN to solve global poverty and war necessarily renders their argument illegitimate. |
