It sounds similar to the night the Wii went on sale. I was up at 3am waiting for it and at 3am the site got really slow but no Wii. They didn't actually put it on until 12pm the next day. Boy were a lot of people pissed. I also read it was on for literally 3 seconds.
Crazy stuff... |

| reply to Authority I hope you realize that 1 click ordering it would have forced an order at $300, not $100.
They had a page that described all this for days beforehand. You did read it didn't you?
The deal would have cost amazon $200,000 if everything went correctly, 1,000 xbox 360s at $100 instead of $300 (I bet wholesale is probably $280 or so but I'll discount that) Its ironic, I bet amazon lost more than the $200k just from being down for 10 mins. |

| Amazon Customers Vote $100 Xbox 360
I waited precisely secs before 1pm EST to refresh only to see the page never stopped loading. Frustrated with the slowdown, I tried a different, but resulted in the same situation. When the page finally loaded, by then it was already too late. The item was listed as sold out. Damn Amazon for lack preparation for something like this. |

I refreshed and refreshed, and within 30 seconds they were sold out. Somehow I doubt it...
Can we get any confirmed reports of anyone getting one of these? |

What a bunch of bull... I started refreshing 3 minutes before 11 and never got a single page to load until 2 past 11 with the xbox sold out...
So much for amazon...
Even if the customer vote thingy is not canceled for next week, I'm not gonna bother. Pie in the sky.... pie in the sky. |

Well, considering that 25,000 people responded in a SINGLE comment thread to calibrate thier computer time to amazon's displayed post time, and I saw a number of other threads of 1,000 to 2,000 people doing same thing (this was before amazon disabled the posting stuff on that page that everyone was reloading)... And only a fraction of people actually post on something like that...
I'm willing to bet it was 500,000 people easy. |

| disappointing experience
I attempted this on a 100mb pipe from a QWEST cybercenter, plugged straight into their internet backbone and while i got to math 101 page instantly, amazon's web server was so slow that IE eventually timed out with a "page can not be displayed" obviously at that point it was too late.
in theory i should have had a decent shot at this, as far as getting my request into their system but if their webserver can handle the requests, it doesn't really matter what your internet connection speed is.
they should have setup a plain small page to do this instead of all their usual fullblown bloated page.

| I actually saw...
I actually saw the Get this Deal button right on the dot at 11am PST. I clicked it and it said page not found, and from that moment on, amazon.com wouldn't load any pages for me.
So, I shoulda got the deal. Stupid amazon.
Next time the page loaded (I had several tabs trying to load the page) it said sold out. |

Would a high speed connection really make a difference in this case?? Even with dial up, you became just another connection for there server to deal with, which is what killed this deal. |

I guess Microsoft has the answer on the magic price point to bury the competition on this round of consoles. Put the core for sale at $100, and everyone else eats dust. |

 Amazon's servers were Xbox 360s (FRAG) |
It was pretty ridiculous. A massive customer DDOS, by far. I was refreshing constantly, and pages slowed from 2 seconds per reload, to 7, to 30, to nothing at all in a period of five minutes up until it went live.
I'd love to see the looks on the people's faces in their NAC or whatever, as everything went to hell in a handbasket.
Pretty good idea, this certainly generated an angry flood-storm of people talking about it... -- "Some people never see the light till it shines thru bullet holes." -Bruce Cockburn
