Anyone have any info on the details for what codec they are using, the bit-rate of the video, and protection scheme used?
I would not mind downloading my movies as long as it was easy to move from PC to PC with minimal amount of DRM headache. |

If you own the DVD why would you want a PC copy? I'd just rip it to my ipod or whatever too. They should do movie downloads for that price then we're talking. |

Because legally, you CAN'T rip the movie to your IPOD. Remember the DMCA, well the DVD is protected under that, and if you do rip the DVD, you are going to spend time with BUBBA in the big house! (where's taylor when we need him?)

What is the Standard format?
The Standard format has quality similar to a DVD. It is optimally viewed on a PC or a TV (via a Windows Media Extender or connected PC). Videos in this format are higher resolution than videos in the Portable format. Standard format videos are encoded at a 640 x 480 resolution with an average bit rate of 1,500 kbps.
What is the Portable format?
The Portable format is optimized for on-the-go viewing using "PlayForSure" portable video players. If played on a PC, the image quality will not be as good as the higher resolution Standard format. These videos are not compatible with Apple iPods. Portable format videos are encoded at a 320 x 240 resolution with an average bit rate of 500 kbps.
Can I transfer a downloaded movie to a different PC?
Yes, but you need to activate the new PC and de-activate your previous PC. Simply call our Customer Service Representatives for help. They are available at 1-888-227-8458 (6 a.m. to 9 p.m. (PT), 7 days a week).

NPR had a short segment on how a university professor lobbied the Library of Congress for an exemption to cut content from a DVD and master it into his own for educational purposes. What was laughable was how the industry representative said a still from the movie is just as good and there was no need to use video aka moving pictures!!

Well if I own it fork them. Anyway looks like a pain in the ass to rip a movie to a ipod if I wanted it I'd just pay the $2 and download it long as it's a nice copy.

They have locked themsleves out of the main portable market? why isn't the IPOD supported, daft decision.
Royal PITA to do anything other than have it on one PC, I'll stick to ripping it via DVD shrink to a backup copy or using a x264 or Xvid codec to get it smaller |

You are allowed to make a backup copy at least, who says the backup copy can't be on your iPod or other portable media device? I do get what you are saying though, neither Apple nor Wal-mart can support this officially since it just opens them up to more lawsuits thanks to the DMCA. It's a shame really, everyone will do it anyway on the black market so to speak which everyone could be cashing in on if they were smart. |

How about I rip the DVD and encode it to a better quality xvid myself with no copy protection?
Sounds much more fair to me.
This is what people feared three years ago... the fact that you'd have to pay again to play something on other devices when there was no technical reason for it.
This is awful, I hope no one stands for it.
You lose the choice of what format and quality to encode at, you lose the choice of being able to do what you want with what you get. You lose freedom by buying into this. There's no good reason you should have to pay twice for the same thing.
I agree that if you bought records, you shouldn't get a bunch of free CDs so your music will work with newer systems. But that's not to say that you shouln't be able to rip media you have so you can watch it on the bus or something.

This won't play on my Cowon A2 either. I doubt it'll play on anything.
The only reason to use a propriatery format that is inferior is to control your content. I don't want to pay $5 so they can control the content I paid $15 for once already.

The iPod isn't supported because the King Of DRM Steve Jobs wont licence Fairplay DRM to any other content service provider ,even though Walmart sells millions of iPods for him .
If anything you should complain to Apple about their DRM not being interoperable outside the iTunes\iPod ecosystem . |
