probably due to price

I'm up for renew on my DSL (DSL Extreme), and have been thinking about going to cable for reliability, and a little kick in speed.

DSL Extreme: $19.95 for 1500/384,
$24.95 for 3000/512,
$34.95 for 6000/768

Time Warner: $34.95 for 1500/384,
$44.95 for 6000/512

I'll keep my extra $$ for now. Even though AT&T's lines may not be the greatest (+12k feet from CO, no VRAD coming to my area in the next year), TimeWarner/Comcast lines in my area are just as old, and there's been many issues with TW/Comcast switchover.

hmm FIOS? Wi-Fi?

Cable and DSL don't make up all of the "Broadband Internet" how about WiFi Internet? or what about fios so the 44% DSL and 56% Cable for the 100% share of "Broadband Internet" don't add up.

I agree. Basic DSL service here can be had for $12.95 per month. Not real fast by state-of-the-art standards to be sure, but for many, many users, 768 down is plenty fast enough. Price will always be a determining factor for many.

very good point... Broadband cellular exists too.
I suspect this should have been posted as 'wired' home broadband internet.

FiOS doesn't come close to the # of DSL and # of Cable providers. Either does Sat or wifi. So just looking at the DSL and Cable stand point, 44% are DSL and 56% are Cable.

There's about a half-million Fios customers, and many Wi-Fi connections are run on either cable or DSL...we're talking residential here...the percentage of the pie taken up by other technologies is pretty minuscule....

I'd get DSL if...

I didn't have to get dial-tone. By the time you add in the dial-tone costs with the DSL costs, and match the speed I have with TW it isn't any cheaper than what I pay now.

Oh, and don't forget all the fees and taxes.

However you slice it, there is plenty of competition ....

...unless you live in the sticks. Want real low prices, pick the absolute slowest and cheapest DSL. Want fast speeds and not near a CO or RT, choose cable. Got both, choose the one that can give you the cheapest bundle. Have Fios, you get fast cable TV and fast DSL internet. Who says the US doesn't have broadband options?

Budget?

I think it is simple: dsl is cheaper but usually slower. that will appeal to most people. I love my cable speed and as long as I can, I will accept the higher prices.
/fios will change everything

Re: I'd get DSL if...

Well, lets compare...

DSL Extreme: $24.95 for 3000/512
AT&T Unlimited (incl Canada) $44.95
DirecTv (3 tuners with plus package) $57.95 including taxes
I receive $5/month discount for bundling with Cingular

TimeWarner: $34.95 for 1500/384
TW digital phone $44.95
TimeWarner Digital Cable: $ 44.95 (1 tuner) + $5/package + franchise fees. $5/tuner
TW discounts would be $10 for bundling

Prices are pretty similar
DSL: 127.85 - $5 Cingular discount = 122.85
Cable: $139.85 - $10 TW bundling = 129.85

Add in AT&T's taxes as well as Time Warner's Franchise Fees and they'll be even closer.

If I didn't use a landline AT ALL (i.e. cellular only), I'd be most likely using Cable.

We've seen quite a few news items about DSL beating cable. If/when FIOS starts to beat both of them, then maybe we'll have something interesting.

First off, I'd like to say FIOS, does not represent all fiber to the home projects, yet people seem to think it does.

Second, I don't think these numbers really mean much at all. How many people can get both cable or dsl. Those are the numbers that might be interesting.

I for one, can get both, and I'd much rather have cable. It is faster in my area, and as for price, who the hell cares.

Re: probably due to price

That's probably about it.
In Tallahassee Comcast's standard package $57.95 for 6M. Embarq's standard package is something like $34.99 for 1.5M. I don't think the average person gives a crap about 1.5M vs 6M as much as they care at $55+ vs. $35. On the other hand, $55 with Embarq will only get you 5M service and that's as high as you can go. Embarq also has everyone on interleave by default making Comcast the way to go for gamers.

Yes, two choices equals "competition". I'll remember that when I'm shopping for a new car, house, appliance, book, computer, eggs, prostitute, etc.

Cable vs DSL

Seems to me the cable ISPs could easily offer a lower tier service to compete directly against DSL. Say like 1.0 or 1.5/368. They could offer slightly more speeds for same price. Unfortunately many current cable subs might drop to lower tier pricing as well.

I wonder how many people would simply drop POTS altogether and go cell phone if they were offered a much lower tier and cheaper cable broadband option?

Re: I'd get DSL if...

You can get Digital Phone for $39.95 when you bundle RR/Cable/Phone.

And ATT's Unlimited Long Distance is capped at a set of minutes I believe its something along the lines of 2,000 minutes per month. I was kicked off that plan with ATT back when they were SBC for calling my brother and nephew in Cali.

They said I talked to much and I had to pay for 25cents per minute.

Some people still wouldn't be satisfied if there were 4 cable company choices, 4 telephone providers, and 3 wifi providers.

Re: probably due to price

Well for those "cablevision" customers on the east coast, they are offering 30M dn and 5M up for slightly over double the cost of DSL's 1.5M lines. And if they can do it all the cables companies could.. just a matter of need. Out here cable has allways put it to the dsl companies, unfortunatly for those "file shares" you will get your bandwidth cut if they feel your "serving".
