Comments on news posted 2006-12-05 15:14:42: AT&T is again defending their decision to go with 25Mbps VDSL instead of fiber to the home, according to Reuters. "Our view at this point is that we're not going to have go 'fiber to the home,'" insists AT&T CFO Richard Lindner. ..

Boys and Girls, please...........

Let the marketplace decide this!!

All of this CxO talk is irrelevant. We users will decide who wins and who looses!! VDSL, ADSL, Coax, Hybrid Fiber Systems, FTTH, it's all just BS. Copper is dying as a transport and fiber is all the rage. Marketplace pressures will decide this little battle. There are lots of variables here, not the least of which is life span and maintenance.

Just a thought,

Re: So it was all Lies?

Voice is designed only for 56k. It wasn't a noise issue. It'd be like complaining that T-1 can only do 1.5megs. One voice line is 1 DS-0

Re: So it was all Lies?

And rural America keeps falling further and further AND further behind....heck, by the time we get broadband which is 1.5-5meg, the rest of the country will be operating at 50-100 meg, and we'll all be back to square one again v_v

Equipment costs money. What do you suppose the Bells and cable companies do? Lose money in the name of charity?

Re: So it was all Lies?

That would be nice, but I know it's not possible.

It's just sickening to me that practically nothing has been done for rural areas in relation to REAL broadband deployment in the last 6 years.

Of course, I've just totally enjoyed my dial-up connection for nearly a decade, I'd be more than happy to use it for another 30 years...

God forbid a business actually invests in improving their business. What a crazy concept. I'm sure then the phone was first invented there was a lot of investment that took several years to pay off because no infrastucture existed. That's kind of how things work. If At&t had the same attitude 125 years ago as it did now we'd still be using the telegraph.

Re: So it was all Lies?

Good thing you mentioned that. You see back 100 years ago the gov't treated communications as a natural monopoly. Bell knew that no matter how much it spent it would eventually make a profit. You see the gov't wants competition. For their to be competitition you have to sacrifice the customers who lose you money.

Blame the gov't for it's horrible telephone regulation. If AT&T had been regulated better you'd have broadband everywhere by now. But no, the gov't broke it up rather then reforming it.

Getting back on point. So how do you think Bell can make a profit by dumping 3-5k on a single customer? What's the profit model on that?

IPTV HD

I have seen IPTV over copper using ADSL2+ and most modems get 30 to 40Mbps. The HD I have seen on two 50" screens one Direct TV HD and one IPTV HD and the IPTV look much better. HD will take about 10Mbps each and SD about 5Mbps. I like it better.

Re: Broadband Perspective.

Pardon my ignorance. But why are we as a country so far behind in comparison to the rest of the world in what we can expect in broadband service?

How are companies in European countries able to provide a higher ratio of people with not only a service, but a much faster service?

Technology and providing consumers with the latest / top-of-the-line is what this society feeds on in these times.

Why is this any different? and the average customer knows nothing better?
