I don't trust this acquisition...

sorry, but the motivations here aren't what I would call being in the special interest of the utorrent community at large... unless cohen can somehow convince isp's to not throttle the BT protocol over their networks, then encryption won't go away... trying to implement an embedded version of utorrent to mobile appliances sounds attractive, but considering the type restrictions that mobile carriers have on their wireless services, then this might not work out so well...

in the end, i don't see this as a benefit except for Strigeus since now he can cash a nice fat check plus royalties while utorrent will eventually stop being utorrent that people like...

Current Versions

The current versions of uTorrent still work well. Keep on using those unless a truely better version of uTorrent comes out.

Granted, it's too early to speculate if uTorrent will be radically changed, but it's good for now.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm planning on doing. As long as the current versions works I'll keep using it, unless someone else makes a utorrent clone with more/better features.

RIP uTorrent

Utorrent mad a good program and bram realizes that. I wish before the merger that they would release the code open source. Now that bram is working on everything else on top of torrents maybe utorrent will work on the protocol and the nitty gritty stuff. I do enjoy utorrent and hope they keep the program running with the current directives guiding future developments but it is inevitable that utorrent will be integrated with drm options and encryption removed. I wonder how much money exchanged hands here?

Symantec syndrome

Another good program gets gobbled up by the crappier competiton. If you can't beat 'em,kill 'em.
Bram made questionable file sharing impossible with his original client,no reason to think he'll do different with Utorrent.

i like utorrent alot

i use it as my primary torrent app on all my live music torrent sites. been using it for at least a year now. ive used azeureus and the original BT client among others and i find utorrent a satisfactory application. also, it uses the least amount of system resources and has always performed like its designed to do. rock solid. no reason to switch yet. the sky is NOT falling yet. I only use torrent apps for trading bands that allow taping and trading. thank you.

Me, I'd use BitComet before Azureus.

Java-based applications are a system/memory hog, IMO.

Hurry, go grab the latest installer version of the real uTorent, and keep it for yourself.

Honestly, as long as uTorrent stays how it is, this shouldn't be a problem. If it changes, however, then we can start getting up-in-arms about it.

True, though I'm sure you could just re-download the older version somewhere if you had to.

You're quite welcome.

All you people complaining about Azureus being a memory hog - are you guys running a Pentium I with 48MB of RAM? Wtf? What's 40MB of RAM anymore? I keep it minimized and don't even notice it's open.

That may very well be the case. And hell, I use FIREFOX and it regularly uses up to 100MB while its running. But at least in my own case, utorrent does exactly what I want whereas azureus may do the same, but has more tacked on features that I couldn't care for. utorrent comes out much lower in terms of cpu/mem usage so it's a winner for me. I have nothing against Azureus. I used to be a hardcore Az user until uT came along. uT just happens to outdo Az in every way in my own case.

But you do have to admit it is true that java based apps are fairly mem/cpu hoggish just by the nature of the beast.

An illegal site buying another. Gee, what a shame. Just buy used CDs. How hard is that? iTunes downloads suck and the rest suck worse. Throttle Bittorrent. I'm sick of ISPs imposing caps because of these HOGS!

Re: Noooooooo!

To partner with the big content companies, BT will presumably have to implement some anti-user features. This requires a closed-source client. Cohen could have made a closed version of his own client, but uTorrent may have a better feature-to-size ratio, and it's already popular.

Although uTorrent has been very popular for its low resource use, efficiency and performance, a minority in the BT community have always mistrusted the closed-source clients. Apart from DRM, possible sabotages could include reporting of user activities, and/or a kill switch. A similar issue came up before when Strigeus made a deal with some organization associated with anti-p2p activities.

Reportedly negative comments on this event are being deleted at the uTorrent forum.

The current version of uTorrent is 1.6. oldversion.com has previous versions.

Re: i like utorrent alot

Okay, let's say you have 2.5gb of ram (like me) and you install Linux and you're only using say....200MB?

What's the damn point of having ram if it isn't being used? Unused ram is useless.

I run XP with a buttload of software and I never go above 1GB used.
