I like it

I got a skypephone and am loving it - i'll continue to use skype instead of other voip providers because of cost. $15/yr for unlimited calls can't be beat

I like

I've been using the free Skype service since May and have been very happy with it. Even got a cheap USB phone from Newegg to go with it. I like the $14.95 deal. I'll get it just to back up my Sunrocket VOIP when it has it's "moments"

If only the Verizon CSRs worked this well.

Still not SIP compliant

It is still not SIP compliant and I still cannot set it up in my ATA. Calling from a computer with your headset on is not really my idea of fun.

WTF

Am I really the only one that thinks that eBay got screwed?

Here is a "company" that provides something for free....so millions of freeloaders sign up. In an effort to appear like a legitimate business with a sustainable business model, therefore an attractive M&A candidate, it tries offering products that cost money and generate revenue...and the response from consumers is negligible.

eBay, having realized that it doesn't have much of a sustainable business model itself, and its CEOs quest to prove that a woman can run a "cool" tech company, gets sold the Brooklyn bridge for $2.5 billion!!!

$2.5 BILLION. It's gonna take a crapload of auctions to get that money back.

And the analyst that thinks that skype can prove its worth by offering "click to call" to business....that market is pretty saturated as it is...and it's been offered for ages!

If you own eBay stock, dump it now, because that company has already seen its best days!

Re: Still not SIP compliant

Exactly. Regardless of what the "myspace" crowd thinks, it will be a very long time before we completely give up telephones for IM, or anything else attached to a computer.

...we'll have to live without faxes, snail mail and newspapers first!

Skype is like a VoIP provider that isn't. It supports no standards and ties you to a desk! If their service is free and I don't use it...why will I pay to use it?

No you are not, though I think they deserved what they got. I thought at the time that eBay's actions were reminiscent of the stupidity going on at the height of the dot-com boom.

It is interesting to compare the Skype purchase with the partial-IPO of Vonage. Many analysts believed the latter was over priced, and the subsequent stock slide reinforced this view. Yet, if you do the sums, the pricing valued Vonage at a small fraction that of Skype which is really strange when you consider that Vonage is the one with a business model that generates regular income.

I think we can thank our lucky stars that the stock markets are stable enough currently that eBay didn't manage to trigger another bust cycle among Internet-related stocks.

Ok $14.95 is a really great deal especially if you go somewhere that there is an Internet connection and for some reason, no phone or really expensive calling.
I think it is worth it as a secondary method. Not primary.

Re: Still not SIP compliant

It is not important that Skype is not SIP compliant and why do you believe that you must use a headset and a computer to use Skype?

Why would you possibly believe that Skype "ties you to a desk"?

You can get a wifi phone that has no wires to your computer at all.

But then again what skype is best for is calling internationally for free (skype to skype). Its also good for gamers to have a quick voice comm solution (what I use it for).

Re: Bloggers??

I'm with you mate. I like Skype, I use SkypeOut, I am happy with the service, I am happy with the improvements they have made, I am happy with the cost, I am happy it runs on Linux and it runs on my PocketPC and I couldn't care less what other people think.

If anyone wants to call me via IP, they better be using Skype, or otherwise they will have to use the PSTN. No Yahoo and Google, AIM and MSN wanna-be's cut it for me. I refuse to use them.

SIP is important to carriers and providers. To me the underlying signaling protocol doesn't matter. If it matters to you, use Vonage or CallVantage and pay the big bucks

Re: Is it traceable

Yes, if I remember correctly I've heard about the calls being traced. It will be even easier if you have a credit card attached to it.

getting better

Skype has been doing better for me. Call quality has improved. Still some lag and delay. However at 15 a year. I think I will go for it.

As for tracing calls and wire taps etc. Damn....I hope the new congress makes that come to a quick halt.
Hell, I'm to old to do anything wrong....but government isn't perfect and I don't trust it. Who knows where such a direction will lead in 100 yrs. Close the damn borders before we sell out. Sorry...little rant there.

Now if skype can pull off a 10 dollars a month skypein........ sweet.
