Comments on news posted 2006-12-15 12:17:11: Yes, we're well aware that the vast majority of Comcast employees are decent, hard-working folk -- but it seems like Comcast just can't catch a break when it comes to its technicians (or subcontractors) and bad news this year. ..

Allegedly punctured a gas line; murder suspect sub-contract

Earlier this month a Comcast tech punctured a gas line that ultimately caused the house to explode,
Don't you mean allegedly punctured, since that investigation has not determined that fact yet. Latest news on this from google search:

But to the issue of the accused murderer and Comcast hiring practices, the major issue there is the use of unmonitored sub-contractors. In this case the sub-contractor did do the required pre-hiring security screenings, but after the employee was accused of killing someone, the sub-contractor should have at the very least removed him from customer calls until the case was resolved. If Comcast has any civil liability here, it will be due to inadequate monitoring of their sub-contractors employee policies.

Triplett, 25, worked for Premier Cable Communications, which subcontracts for Comcast. He had no previous criminal record and had passed a criminal background check by Premier, according to a Comcast spokeswoman.

I think its a little unfair to attack many of the hard working folks at comcast who go to work to pay the bills, and feed the kids.

Just actions of individuals

It's rediculous to blame the company for these things. When you have this many employees you are going to have a few bad apples.

Is he "allegedly" being held for murder or it is a fact he is being held for allegedly committing murder?

Oh, I heard that too. I can't find any mention of it on Snopes, so it must be true.

I also heard the techs like back their big Comcast vans over kittens, clean the kitten guts out of the waffle of the tread, and grill them over an open fire .

IDIOTIC

This is completely idiotic, and has nothing to do with the fact that these morons work for Comcast or were contracted by Comcast.

Judge people based on their actions, not based on the company's name badge they happen to be wearing.

that's a good perspective.

even with all the best "hiring practices" in the world, there are bound to be some bad apples around. you could take hair samples, stool samples, every conceivable drug testing, CIA style background checks and still end up with someone who turns out either bad, or in the wrong situation, or who makes a seriously bad decision. that's life.

I have to side with your perspective here, and say that it doesn't have much to do with the company or its policies.

If this person is guilty, let a court decide their fate. That's the American way.

Re: Allegedly punctured a gas line; murder suspect sub-contract

On your first note, it was in fact determined that he did puncture it and called in the gas company to fix it. This part was never in debate.
What was "alleged" was that the punctured line lead to the explosion. But I agree with your point, certainly since in my mind the gas company's failure to shut off the punctured gas is what actually lead to the explosion.

On the topic at hand...... I agree that you can't directly blame Comcast for this sub-contractors actions. I'd even take it a step further to say that unless someone notified them of the criminal charge, or even suspicion of one, there really isn't much they could have done. The police to not make a habit of calling the employer after an arrest.

Keeping in mind I have absolutely NO love for Comcast what so ever, but I choose to hate them for the things within their control, not fluke/rogue contractors.

Re: IDIOTIC

How many AT&T associated employees have been involved with negative news making activity?

How many Google associated employees have been involved with negative news making activity?

AT&T is huge. Google is huge. Google is known for hiring world-class people for even the most minial tasks.

An employees actions most certainly has something to do with who they work for. If a company is repeatedly associated with negative actions by their employees, maybe the company should consider if their qualifications should be a bit higher than "can climb a ladder, carry up to 50lbs, and has own truck".

He's being held for an alleged murder.

It's a matter of semantics, I was trying to be comedic with my "allegedly"....

Guess my time on the job has twisted my sense of humor a bit, and the normals don't get the joke..

Sorry....
