Yeah, which is why I don't understand the deal with Earthlink. A few months ago it was all over the papers about Earthlink This and Earthlink That, then silence. Now a resurgence of Earthlink Wi-Fi? I dunno, I'll stick with Cox Communications. It works better now then before the storm

Here | Everybody works better now. People in New Orleans have more connectivity options than they can shake a stick at.
As to the 3G, it's nice but it doesn't cover Slidell yet. |

Why do people insist on comparing Wi-Fi service to single location DSL and/or cable service? It would be kind of like saying my home phone line is cheaper than cell phone service so I won't be getting a cell phone. |

I still can't take my laptop with me and hook up to Cox or Bellsouth while sitting in my car, pulled over on some street, using Google for directions. Earthlink addresses an area that Bellsouth and Cox have failed to address.
As for Bellsouth's "WiMax" network... You have to lug around their receiver and have access to a 120VAC outlet to power it, so it doesn't really work for portability.
Earthlink fills a gap that needs to be filled - mobile broadband that faster than cell services.

Short for wireless fidelity and is meant to be used generically when referring of any type of 802.11 network, whether 802.11b, 802.11a, dual-band, etc. The term is promulgated by the Wi-Fi Alliance.

Did you read this part? "Cingular's Unlimited DataConnect plan currently is $59.99 for customers who sign up for a two year term and have a qualifying voice plan with Cingular."
Quite a bit more expensive than what Earthlink is offering. |
