No it's not.

Anywho, Earthlink is a day late and a few hundred thousand dollars short. Cox sprung back to life after the hurricane. If Earthlink wanted a piece of the pie they should have jumped on it immediately following the hurricane.

New Orleans is back up for the most part. BellSouth set up a Wi-Max network that covers the entire city already. Been up for months.

Yeah, which is why I don't understand the deal with Earthlink. A few months ago it was all over the papers about Earthlink This and Earthlink That, then silence. Now a resurgence of Earthlink Wi-Fi? I dunno, I'll stick with Cox Communications. It works better now then before the storm

Edit: Check this out, better than Earthlink as the coverage is wider. »money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/art···06-1.htm

Everybody works better now. People in New Orleans have more connectivity options than they can shake a stick at.

As to the 3G, it's nice but it doesn't cover Slidell yet.

So what's your point? Nothing I have said disagrees with your article. Wi-Fi Alliance coined the term wireless fidelity.

Why do people insist on comparing Wi-Fi service to single location DSL and/or cable service? It would be kind of like saying my home phone line is cheaper than cell phone service so I won't be getting a cell phone.

Not really... I still can't take my laptop with me and hook up to Cox or Bellsouth while sitting in my car, pulled over on some street, using Google for directions. Earthlink addresses an area that Bellsouth and Cox have failed to address.

As for Bellsouth's "WiMax" network... You have to lug around their receiver and have access to a 120VAC outlet to power it, so it doesn't really work for portability.

Earthlink fills a gap that needs to be filled - mobile broadband that faster than cell services.

It's been up.

It's been up for about a month or so, just not "officially." It works pretty well...in fact I often get better signal for it than I do my own network.

Didn't mean to hit reply to you Rob See Profile, sorry.

bmn See Profile, whatcha mean by hooking up to Cox or Bellsouth while sitting in your car? By using someone's unsecured wireless network?

I was looking for a coverage map, do you have a link for one?

Short for wireless fidelity and is meant to be used generically when referring of any type of 802.11 network, whether 802.11b, 802.11a, dual-band, etc. The term is promulgated by the Wi-Fi Alliance.

Any products tested and approved as "Wi-Fi Certified" (a registered trademark) by the Wi-Fi Alliance are certified as interoperable with each other, even if they are from different manufacturers. A user with a "Wi-Fi Certified" product can use any brand of access point with any other brand of client hardware that also is certified. Typically, however, any Wi-Fi product using the same radio frequency (for example, 2.4GHz for 802.11b or 11g, 5GHz for 802.11a) will work with any other, even if not "Wi-Fi Certified."

Formerly, the term "Wi-Fi" was used only in place of the 2.4GHz 802.11b standard, in the same way that "Ethernet" is used in place of IEEE 802.3. The Alliance expanded the generic use of the term in an attempt to stop confusion about wireless LAN interoperability.

Did you read this part? "Cingular's Unlimited DataConnect plan currently is $59.99 for customers who sign up for a two year term and have a qualifying voice plan with Cingular."

Quite a bit more expensive than what Earthlink is offering.

The 3G is a cellular regionwide effort. BellSouth offers 1.5M/256k for $32.99/month.

Exocet_cm osted already concerning this. The creators of the term came up with the term then post hoc created "wireless fidelity". Wi-Fi wasn't an abbreviation.
