2 Dem commissioners likely to vote "YES" on merger

AT&T offered the concessions after a little more than a week of marathon negotiations with lawyers who work for the two Democrats on the commission, Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein, documents show.
Looks like the Dem commissioners won't need any study time since it was their lawyers who brokered the AT&T concessions. I would expect the 2 Dems to OK a deal they brokered.

All that means is they tried to give Copps and Adelstein what they want -- not necessarily that they actually did.

Edit: This link seems to more fully suggest they're ready to play:

Our understanding is that AT&T has cleared the language of the concessions with FCC officials, including the two Democratic commissioners who have been withholding their approval. So unless there’s a last-minute surprise or political backlash (which we are not seeing so far), our sense is the [FCC] is likely to clear the transaction today so that the companies can close the merger today,” Stifel Nicolaus analysts said in a client note Friday.

Oh wow, gezz what a concession. Naked DSL at 768k. I bet they restrict who the Naked DSL can terminate to as well. BellSouth already refuses to allow their Wholesale customers to offer 6.0 or 256k service. I am sure that AT&T will allow you to have naked DSL as long as it is with AT&T/SBC/BellSouth.net.

A real since of broadband competition.

High speed?

Do these commissioners really believe that 768 Kbs is broadband? Just because that is the official government definition of broadband doesn't mean it has to be accepted. Is it really too much to ask for our leaders to understand the technology and demand reasonably fast connections?

Re: High Speed? FCC defines it as 200Kbits

No, they actually believe 200K is broadband. That's the FCC's official definition. Of course, this is only in order to slant statistics towards showing that USA has good broadband coverage, even if someone gets a ridiculously slow satellite feed with 256K nominal download.

broadband in the U.S. will still suck

merger, no merger - makes no difference, broadband in the U.S. will still suck.

It will probably suck a little more if the merger happens, but overall no big difference.

The Electronically submitted letter is available at www.FCC.gov. Why not go to the horses mouth and actually READ it?

Odd that people seem to feel these two commssioners have too much power but that the new ATT won't. LOL

Merger AT&T and Bell South was approved

The approval has been given. The 2 Dems voted for approval as expected.

Here is the official news release from the FCC:

Huzzah... Once I had a decent phone company (bellsouth) now I get the toxic elements of steamed crap.

The FCC news release doesn't say anything about what other affects this merger causes except crap that was covered in fairy dust and blown up my a__! "Benefits to consumers include:..." (keeping kronies rich) and "The Commission’s analysis of competitive effects focused on six key groups of services. They are:..." (money, more money, syphony money from you, funneling money towards ATT, richer kronies, bigger a___oles for the rest of us so they can screw us harder). What bad affects are there? Have they even thought of the side affects of a single company owning over half the nation's phone lines?

And why the rush before the New Year?

A new Congress is seated on Jan 4. And a Democratic Congress may have tried to use political clout to cancel the merger. Now, the only recourse is in the courts.
